MINING NEWS.
Thames, Feb. 20. Saxon. — The usual works are proceeding in thi.s mine, bub there is no change since my last report. The country in the drive at No 5 level continues very hard. New Moanataiki — Although only a limited number of men are employed in this mine, excellent piogre&s is being made with the works recently started by Mr Clark, the mine manager. The Cambria No. 4 level has been cleaned out and rails laid down up to the reef, and a start has now been made to cut through to the hangingwall of the big lode. When this is finished, it is intended to drive along its course on the hangingwall side with all uossible expedition. Very satisfactory headway is being made with the drive on the hangingwall leader, at the top of what is known as Vivian's winze at No. 3 level, and it is now in 9ft. After passing through the crosscut, the leader turned off to the left, , and as it is ruuning almost parallel with the boundary, the MoanatairiCompany will only have t v e height of the drive upon it at this level. By continuing the extension of the drive, however, th« manager would not only prove the value of the lode at this level, but also the more easily determine its position at- No. 4 level, which can very easily be opened up by advancing the main crosscut and connecting with the winze already sunk. The hangingwall rib of quartz, which is 3 or 4 inches thick, is being saved for crushing, as it contains some nice mineral, bub no gold has been seen in it. The main Moanataiari tunnel has now been cleaned out and repah'ed for a distance of 410 ft beyond the big slide. NouTii Stak. — Adams and party have finished a crushing of 2 loads of quartz-tor the handsome yield of 24o<s gold.
