THE HURRICANE AT FIJI
Furtiiek particulars are to hand of the damage done by the recent hurricane which swept over the Fiji group. The captain of the s.s. Southern Cross reported on arrival at Suva from the neighbouring islands: — "At Lotna Loma the burnt look made it visible to all on board fc!>at the late gale had left tracks behind it. Several native houses were reported destroyed and native food plantations damaged, also cocoanut trees. At Mango the same casualties weie recorded. Taviuni seems to have been the centre of the late storm, many verandahs of European houses being blown away, native houses blown down and many food plantations destroyed. Wairiki appears to have suf ferred most, the Roman Catholic Church having succumbed to the force of the gale, acd other buildings injured. The following were the lowest readings ot the barometer at the 3 following islands : — North Taviuni, 27.30 ; Mango, 28.40 ; and Loma Loma, 23.99."
