Auckland, February 16. Auckland Tattersall's Club inaugural race meeting is being held on the North Shore r acecourse this afternoon. As usual, the races were delayed in starting, and it was 20 minutes to 2 before the flag fell for the first event. There is only a fair attendance. Mr D. Halstead is wielding the starter's flag, and the jockeys are wearing bands of crape on their arms as a mark of respect to Major Walmsley. The Artillery Band under Mr Hunter is located in its usual place on the lawn. Handicap Maidex Plate of 25sovs. One mile. Satyr, 7st 121b (Wright) . 1 Reproach, Bst 51b (Bell) . 2 Toafcoa, 7a fc 71b (O'Meara) 3 Muskerina (7st 321b) and Lady Lonsdale (7st) also started. Satyr and Lady Lonsdale made the running for the first half-mile, when Satyr came away and won by a clear length. Time, lmin 50sec. Dividend, £3 2s.
Hurdle Race. Artist (Hadfield) . . . 1 Orangeman (Rae) ... . 2 Landseer (Williams) wa.s the only other starter. Artist led Landseer by a cou pie of lengths till the back of the course for home when Landseer fell, Orangeman then closed on Artist, bub the latter always had the best of it and won by two engths. Dividend, £3 3s. Tattersall's Club Cup Handicap, of 60 soys ; second horse to receive lOsovs out of stakes. One mile and a-quarter. Mr T. B. Bell's b m Mantilla, by Anteros — Matana, syrs, 7st and lib over (Noilly) ... l Mr B. Thompson's *b m Capella, aged, 7st (Priest) . 2 Mr W. Robertsons eh m Leorina, syrs, Bst 41b (Katterns) 3 Also started :— Balista, B=<t 71b (Taylor); Lioness, 7s fc and 31b over (Hickton); and Cushla, 6st 101 band 2Mb over (O'Meara). When the flag dropped" Lioness was left at the post. Capella was quickest on her legs, followed by Mantilla. The first-named led till the back of the course for homo, where Mantilla assumed the pride ot place, and coming on full of running,' won rather easily by a couple of lengths. Time, 2min 16-£ sec. Those who backed Lioness on the totalisator demanded a refund of their money, and the mater was refeired to the stewards, who ruled that as the mare had weighed out and wen to the post, and was hands of thet arter, Selling Race of 30sovs : for three-year-olds and upwards. Seven turlongs. Mr H. H. Hayr's big Squire, by Papapa — Hatred, aged, 9st 51b (J. Laing) .. 1 Mr J. Hunt's eh m Dollar, 4yrs. 7st 41b (Priest) . .. 2 Mr M. R. Halcrow's big Signess, aged, Bst 51b (G, Laing) 3 Also ran : —Black Joe, 6st 12lb (Gallagher); and Toatoa, 6st 121b (O'Meara). Dollar led till the back of the course, when Squire assumed command, and although closely pressed in the straight he gained a length verdict. Dividend, £2 2s, On Squire being submitted to sale, he was bought in by his owner for £50. Handicap Pony Race of 20sovs ; second pony to receive ssovs out of the stakes. Once round the course. Mr Reti Ngakei Hepata'fe b q Dynamite, aged, 1 Ost (Laing) . ... 1 Mr J. R. MctJee'sfch mlhumata, 3yrs, Bst 41b (McGee) ..' 2 Mr Reihana's b in Little Nell, aged, 9st (McGee) 3 Also started : — Fanny Fisher, 7st 121b (Hicton) ; Pica, 7sfc 101b (Priest) ; Leo, 7st 51b (O'Meara) ; Sandfly, 7st and 31b over (Wright) ; Baker, 7st (Neilly) ; Nigger, 7st (Gallagher) ; Haricot, Ost 71b (Reid) ; and Possum, 6st 71b (Farrar). Ihumata was quickest to leave the mark, but Nigger had command when the back of the course was reached. He soon died away, however, and Ihumata again took command. Nearing the home turn, Dynamite came with a rush, and passing the leader, won rather easily by a length. Mr McGee entered a protest against Dynamite receiving the stake', on, ground that he was over the height, but
after taking evidence the stewards disallowed the protest. Dividend; ,-£4 12s. Handicap Steeplechase of 60sovs.,' second hoive to receive lOsovs out of the stakes. About 3 miles. Mr W. , Hadtield's b q Artist, by The Painter— Mab, aged, lOst 121b (Hadfield) 1 Mr J. Raes b q Orangeman, aged, list 51b (Rae) ,' 2 Mr P. J. Perry's br q Whalebone, aged, 9st 121b ( J. Laing) ' 3 Hawthorn 9st 121b (Edgecombe), and Quilp 9st (Pearson), were the only other starter?. Hawthorn led Whalebone over tho first obstacle, but at the h"urdle at the side of tho old slaughter - house, Hawthorn fell and broke his neck. Artist then went to the front, and despite the vigorous efforts of Rae on Orangeman, the leader was never headed, and he won by half-a-dozen lengths, Whalebone and Quilp being close up. Dividend, £2 10s. St. Valentine's Handicap of 30sovs ; second horse to receive ssovsout of stakes. The winner o\ Tattersall's Cup to carry 71b penalty. Five furlongs. Mr H. H. Beresford's eh q Satyr, 3yrs, 6st 101b (6lb over, Wright) 3 Also ran": — Capella, 6st 121b; Puschka, 6st 121b (Gallagher); Mantilla, 6sb 121b (Neilly), Lioness, 6st 101 band 51b over (Hickton); Jessie, 6st (Priest) ; and Octopus, 6st (Reid). Puschka was quickest away, but at the back of the course Jessie and Cushla had command, Squire and Satyr being most prominent of the others. Squire and Cushla were first in the straight, and a ding-dong battle home ended in the judge awarding a short; head verdict to Squire. Time, lmin. 7sec Divideud, £2 13s.
