Tb Auohi S. an.l G. M. Co. :— Work in connection with the new additions to the Co.'s pant is steadily progressing. Considerable alterations are being effected in connection with the old plant. A large floor is now in course of construction for drying tlie roncentialions as fast as they are taken away from the concentrators. The floor or " kiln" will boconstructPil immediately over the reverberatory furnace, across the top o[ which heavy rails huve been placed (in much the same way as flooring 1 joists), upon which will be laid thick iron plates, forming the bed of the kiln. By this means a very powerful kiln will be available, free of expense beyond the fiist outlay, as no fuel will bu required, the heat emanating from the reverberatory furnace providing all that will be required in this respect ; so that by the adoption of this plan, Mr Howell will be able to affect a large saving in the cost of fuel. From the kiln (which will be capable of drying twen'y tons a day) | the concentrations will be wheeled direct into a large hopper stationed at the foot of the revolving furnace, into the mouth of which they will be automatically conveyed by means of an elevator, and after passing through the revolving furnace will be conveyed automatically into the reverberatory furnace. By first drying all concentrations in the manner indicated, they can be subsequently treated much more rapidly, efficiently, and nfc less cosfc. At the tailings' plant, the original revolving furnace lias been raised two feet, and the condensing chambers have all been greatly enlarged and reconstructed ; so that this furnace will now be equal to treating twenty-five to thirty tons of tailings (for which purpose it will be reserved ) daily, whereas before these alterations were made it was only capable o? creating ten tong daily. The erection of the smelting house (for the water jacket furnace), has been completed, and nothing more can be done in connection with the erection of the smelting plant until the arrival of the machinery, which is expected daily ; but \ this portion of the plant will not be required until tho rest of the plant has been at work some weeks, to prepare a supply of oro for treatment. One of the four new rockbreakeis (Blnikio's) has been started, and some thirty or forty tons quartz passed through as a trial, which was very satisfactory. Water has now been laid on to the fourteen concentrators that are in position, ready to start work. In connection with the water- race exten - Hion,«heflumingacro?s all thesmall gullies will he completed this week, leaving only the laying of the pipes across the two lur^ei gullies to complete this work. The Company have made application to the Wai din's Court for the light to censtruct two other water ruces, to act as feeders to the main eupply.
