EXHIBITIONS Melbourne, January 31.
The Exhibition closed this afternoon. HU Excellency the Governor conducted tho proceedings, which were of a formal nature. The main corridor of the building> known as the Avenue of Nations, was lined with troops. The President, Sir James Mcßain, read a lengthy address, giving a resume, of tho Exhibition since the opening on .August 1. He stated that the attendance had reached J ,900,000. Sir Henry Loch then handed a copy of tho Rolls of Awards to the representatives of each nation. The enthusiasm accorded to the American repiesentatives was a marked feature of the proceeding:*. His Excellency the Governor, in a short speech, congratulated all and sundry on the success of the Exhibition, which he declared closed. After singing the National Anthem, and giving three cheers for Her Majesty, the assemblage dispersed. Melbourne, January 31. Further awards in connection with the Melbourne Exhibition were announced today as follows :--For models of steamers : Union Steam&hip Company, of Dunedin, first award. Patent life-saving raft for sea use : Captain Allman, of tho Union s.s. Company, third, Collision apron : Mr Hohnes, Auckland, fourth award. Timber exhibits : The Colonial Museum, Wellington ; New Zealand Commissioners, Wellington ; Public Works Depaitment, Wellington ; New Zealand Midland Raitway Company, Christchurch ; Booth and Co., Wellington ; and Professor T. Kirk, F.L.S., Wellington, are awarded first prizes. Mr W. Rathbone, Waipawa ; Mr If. Smith, Mohatohu, and Mr A. Tapper, Invercargill, receive second awards, and Mr W. Douthwaite, Hokitika, and the Borough of Queenslown, Otago, third awards. Coal baskets : YV. Muir, Dunedin, and M. Sullivan, Dunedin, each third. Tuning apparatus : Messrs Milner and Thompson, Christchurch, receive honourable mention. Sboub oats : Messrs Chamberlain Bros., Masterton, Loan and Mercantile Co., and J. and T. Meek, Oamaru, each reccivo first awards, and the New Zealand and Australian Land Co., Dunedin, both first and second ; Evans and Co., (Limited), Timaru, second award ; Mr J. B. Chambers, Havelock, honourable mention. Malting barley :A. G. Free, Picton, first award. Bailey: New Zealand and Australian Land Co. and Vincent and Co., Christchurch, each a warded second. Wheat : Hon. W. Holmes, Dunedin ; Robertson, Queenstown ; Chambeilain Bros., Masterton ; and Evans and Co. (Limited), Timaru, each a second award; Mr J. H. Brown, Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, and Donald Reid and Co., receive honourable mention. Danish oats : J. and T. Meek, Oamaru. socond award. The jurors report that tho exhibits ol New Zealand wheat are of very good qualit}', but in weight are not as satisfactory as was expected. The stout oats were of excellent quality, New Zealand standing first in excellence. In malting barley New Zealand stands first for weight, but the Victorian exhibits were generally preforable for malting.
