LOCALITY OF THE SETTLEMENT.
Tho two Omahas, Big and Little, are old settlements lying between Matakana and Pakiii. The original settlers wero chiefly ot the forty acre class located dining the early provincial days of the colony. Some ot theso increased their holdings by purchasing adjacent land. Most of them have comfortable homesteads and have done very well, having had the advantage of the large quantity of Crown land around as runs for their cattle free. This has been v.o small advantago to those who availed themselves of it by btarting a few head of cattle, which have kept on increasing naturally till wanted for the markets, costing little trouble or expense. Som" of these old settlers also turned their attention to frnifcgrowing, and have "\eiy good orchards, which are now a source of income to them. But both Big and Little Omaha had remained almost stationary till the advent ot the village settlers in their vicinity.
