Fair Fire-Fighters.

It is reported in the London papers that fire biigades for ladies have been formed at Girton and ISTewhara Colleges, and more recently at the Royal Holloway College, Mr Merryweather, who, next to Captain Shaw, is the great authority on fires and fire engines, has organised the faminine students at Holloway into a brigade, and stales that at a preliminary drill they showed any amount of alacrity and intelligence. Writing on the same subject London ' Health ' says that the majority, were very quick and agile in making the connections with the hydrants, running out the hoses, working , the fire-pumps and corridor engines^ and various other manoeuvres. The students drill in sections, the respective floors being alloted to different detachments in order to, .secure the famili-, arity with the requirements of each part of tho building. Such brigades are useful. They diminish the probability of disorder and panic in case of fire. The drill is a healthful exercise, and adds to the general esprit de corps which should prevail in an uneducational establishment.' Anyone who has seen ballet ■ girls drill can quite understand the intelligence ; aridas for pluck and endurance, the Indian Mutiny, and the South African Campaign are guarantees enough for that. Whether the amicable relations between .our Vic--torian brigades would be .improved by any introduction of this, sort is another ques, tion for consideration.- ,
