POLICE COURT, TE AROHA. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY I6th. (Before Messrs Johnson and Dobson, J.s P.)

Horace Wood, who was remanded at the request of the ' police from Friday last to to-day, was charged on the information of J. B. Smith, with the larceny of one serge coat, one serge vest, one handkerchief, and one cheque book, to the total value of £1, on or about the 20th March, 1888. The offence being an indictable one, the prisoner was asked by the Bench whether he elected to have the case tried by the Court, or to talte his trial by a jury. Prisoner said he preferred the case being dealt with sumarily by the Court Accused pleaded " not guilty" to the charge. Constable Murray, of Hamilton, stated that the information wa9 laid by Mr J, B. Smith, in March last, and as that gentleman was away at the time the case could not then be proceeded with. Mr j Smith had since left the colony, and he (the constable) now therefore wished to withdraw the charge. Case dismissed. The same prisoner was then charged with the larceny of one black velvet dress, on or about the 20th April last, the property of C. N. Murray, of Walton, value, £2 10s Accused pleaded "guilty" to this charge. The Bench addressing prisoner said : In conei leration to his having pleaded guilty to the charge, and having already been punished for an offence committed about the same time, they had decided to deal leniently with him. Sentenced to imprisonment in Mount Eden goal for two months with hard labour.
