OUR NEW GOVERNOR.

« ( BAriEß,"."\in the "Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News," says : — My corres. dondence shows me that I have a number of friends in New Zealand, and I congratulate them on the" appointment) of so excellent a sportsman as Lord Onslow as Governor of the colony. I chance to be well acquainted with that part of Surrey in which Lord Onslow's property lies, and know tho estimation in which his lord&hip is held there. It will bo an amazing thing if he is not one of the most popular Governors ever sent to 'the Colonies, and this popularity Lady Onslow will mosb iully share, for she in a favourite with all classes, alike in the cottages of her district — she will be sorely missed in the little hospital for poor children at Clandon, which, with characteristic anxiety to do good and make others happy, she and Lord Onslow have founded — and in what is conventionally known as " society," where her wit and gaiety, keen &cnse of the ludicrous, power of humorous satire which is never ungenerously used, and kindness of heart are cordially appreciated No one ha& of late years done more hard work in various administrative departments than Lord Onslow, who is an excellent all-round sportsman, but who makes the sports of which he is so fond a recreation, not an occupation. He is an exceptionally good shot, rides well to hounds, is favourably known as a member of the two coaching clubs, and, to sum up, unites in himself the best qualities of the representative English gentleman. I repeat that my New Zealand readers are to be congratulated on hi& acceptance of the Governorship.
