MINING NEWS. Thames, Jan. 9.
Trenton. — In consequence of the hardness of the country in che shaft, the contractors have given up their contract, and sinking is now proceeding with wages men. Saxo>. — The drive at No. 5 level is now in a distance of 122 ft, or a little past where it was expected that the " break" met with at No. 4 level would be reached. The reef is divided into two branches, one of which is 8 or 9 inches in thickness and the other fully 12 incheb, and dabb of gold were freely seen in both when last breaking down, and 3 or 41bs of very good picked stone selected from the genei-al dirt. There are also several gold-bearing stringers in the sandstone separating both bodies of stone, and as the whole is saved for treatment, the width of crushing dirt obtainable is about 2Ut, all of which is more than payable. From the fact that gold is seen so freely at this point, it may reasonably be expected that something good will be met with when the winze is reached. The sinking of this winze is proceeding, but the reef has not been broken down bince operations were resumed. The various stopes are yielding excellent crush ing dirt, upon which the full force of the stampers at the Company's battery is engaged. New Moan* ataiiu. — MrG. S. Clark, who' was appointed to tho management of this i mine, will assume control after the 31st inst.
