Lancelot Newton T»as charged with attempting to ommit suicide on January 3rd, by jumping into (he Wnihou river, Te Aroha. Accused pleaded " Guilly." G.tbolinscy : The defendant was charge 1 with selling liquor at the? M-itamafc.i pices, on January Ist without a license. Defendant pleaded "guilty," but stated he got a permit from. Messrs Clifford and Marshall, of Mqrrin«uille, (icensing Commissioueis for the Waito.i Licensing and staged he did not know thaji the fee, which he had sent on to Cambridge, sjiould have been paid at Te Aroha,. Sergeant Emerson, stated that as the defendant apparently intended to' have complied with the Inw he would not press for a fine. Dismissed ' wi{,h n caution. C. Norris v. W. Collet, claim, £21 7s 4d. Judgment for ' amount claimed, and costs £1 lGs. Smith and Don v. Herbert Kandolpb, claim £17 12s G-1 (judgment summons). In reply to Mr A. A. Smith, defstidant stated that he had been receiving a rpmittance from Home of J-5 a month, but was not able to pay anything qufc of that, as, at the end of the montii he had nothing left. He denied having played billiards for 10.9 a game ; nlthoqgli'he admitted that he had frequently visjte'd the billiard room. When asked what lie thought he could pay a month he replied that he could make no arrangements to pay anything as his remittance had stopped, and he was worse off now than before. His Worship ordered that the smonnt be paid by instalments of 10s per month, first payment to be made on the 19 th iust.
