MURDER NEAR MELBOURNE.
Meleouhn*., December 27.— A shocking murder was committed at Cambeiwell today. A man named John Anglin, 40 i years of asre. ami who \vu- lonncih in the police force, h:\< been Jiving apart from his wife chiving the past two years, owing, it is said, to his ill-treatment j of her. He has the replication of having i been absurdly and insanely jealous ot j his wife, who bore an excellent character, j There wcie two childi. n by marriage, and j latterly Anglin has on onepietextor another j endeavoiu ed to gain possession of them. His wife, however, \\ ho had established herself as a music teacher at Alexandra, refused to let them see him unless there was a witness present, as she feared that he would take them away from her. Mrs Anglin resided with her brother-in-law, Mi John Rhodes, ut Camberwell, the children staying wirh her. On Christinas Day Anglin went three times to the hou-e and asked to be allowed to see his children. The third time wa> in theeveningabout 7 o'clock, and Mr and Mrc Rhodesandthe servantgirlwe< - e athome and hadjusttinislied dinner. Heagain demanded his children, this lime ot Mrs Rhodes, but the latter refused to trive them to him and ordered him oft the premises. At he did not move Rhodes went bade to pick up a bit of wood with the object of frightening him, but the tii>>t thinjs. he came across was> fche wood-axe, with which he walked towards Anglin. The latter immediately pulled out a revolver and tired, the bullet entering Rhodes'*left arm and breaking it. The latter walked to the side of the house, where he fainted, and Anglin proceeded inside to the dining-room, uheie Mr« Anglin had gone directly she saw him. After hearing the shot which wounded Rhodes Mrs Anglin rushed out, when she was met on the threshhold by her husband, wiio delibeiately tired at her. She then retired into the room aeain and he followed her, and two more shots were heard. Anglin then left the house, threw his revolver away and proceeded to the local police station, where he coolly cave him&elf up. On the dining-room being examined, Mrs Anglin wa- found dead with one bullet wound over her left breast and another over the right temple.
