The Christmas holidays -hnve 'passed off | very quietly, the majority of local residents having proceeded e : ther to Auckland or .the Thames. Messrs, Crosby and Co.'s and' Brad ley- and Gtf/s^coaojie^were wel^ j patronised by passengers for the Thames' | races, and there was also a large caval- 1 i cade of hbrsemenVana\lbuggies..^ The only' local amusements were the Mackaytown sports at Nash 's -paddocks, wherethere was • a first-class ; attendance, and I all the^ivents wore'well contested. ' The Committee, Messrs -Haslett, Littlejohn, Bauld, and others were .very enthusiastic in the fulfilment of their duties. The following is ' a report of ' the various events :—: — •< ■« » ". >' • Maiden Race, 120 yds, C. Rojph, 1 ; Carter, 2 '; 'Thorp, 3 ; Pony Race, 1£ miles, BLackthorp, 1 ; , Waihi, 2 ; ( Hihe,,3 ' There were six entries forthe pony race which \vassplendidlyconteJj}|.ed;J.Pemiell riding the winner. .Hurdle Race, Ohinemvri, 1 ; Wharetai, 2 ; Nels n, 3 Ohinemuri Cup, 3 heats, was eventually won by Andrew Dihar, Ralph taking secondf prize There were also a number of minor events. Mining is of. course just now a dead letter,, "there being simpty nothing doing duryigfthe holidays. . • The-iTew machine boose for the Ivan!#na* Truro has be<-n finished, and Mr McCombie is now erecting the machinery recently brought from Waitoa. Mr W. T. Firth, lato of Matamata, has taken a number of riverside paddocks in this district, which he is now putting down in potatoes. He is ploughing, disc-harrowing, and afterwards ploughing in the seed. He 1 purposes to irrigate by steam power from the river. Mr Reuben Parr is superintending operations here, and Messrs Goonan and Quinlivan are the contractors for the ploughing at 17s 6d per diem, man, two linrsfls find d.F. ninnorh.
