WAIHI BRIDGE.

At length there appears some probability of the Waihi bridge being restored. At the last meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council a special Co mnittee (consisting of the Chairman, Messrs Robson, Corbetr, and Quinn) was ap pointed to visit the ground and select a site for the erection of a bridge across the Ohinemuri river afc Waihi, to replace the one carried away by a flood some years ago. On Tuesday last the Committee proceeded on a visit of inspection, and after carefully examining the different sitea available, selected as the best one about midway between the old bridge site and that of the Waihi G. M. Co's reduction works, being distant from the latter about a quarter of a mile. A bridge erected at the proposed place, would, we are informed, be easy of access from either the Waihi or Katikati side, requiring very little outlay in the way of forming road approaches. Mr E. M. Corbott (one of the Committee, and an engineer of considerable ability) stated that a traffic bridge oapab'.e of carrying six tons, and which would in every way amply suffice all requirements, could be constructed at the place selected for £200. Seeing Government some little time ago promised Ohinemuri County Council to contribute, as a subsidy on the £ for £ principle, £250 towards the consti notion of this, bridge, it may reasonably be supposed the. work will nowbe undertaken and the bridge speedily restored. tWe .may state, that ; the estimate upon which' the £250 ' was promised ( via., £500) was one submitted to Government by Thames County County Council. By the specifications (for the ensuing two years contract) for conveyance "of ~ mails between Tauranga and Paeroa, they must be conveyed via Waihi. Without abridge this will' be no easy matter, as in time of freshes the' river at Waihi is unfordhble. ' We may a<ld that on his return to Paeroa the Chairman at once wired to. Government (who had telegraphed asking how such .a" discrepancy,' arose* as" regards estimated" cost) .explaining, tlifc circumstances ' relating to!,the iCasei and stating thafc'to; good '-substantial' bridge could be erected for the sum stated,' arid asking that Government contribute .the .money promised, as^ a grant instead! of a subsidy. 1 " " \ £ l A " ' { « y.
