OHINEMURI-COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held on Saturday last. Present : Crs Nicholls (chairman), Strange, Quinn, Nash, Moore, Robson, and "Dearie. Prior to the commencement of tbe business, the Chairman returned thanks to the Councillors for (he honour thoy hail accorded liim in his election. He said that when his term had expired he had hoped some other councillor would have stood for election, but they all seetnod reluotant. < - , Cr Moore said he had intended at the commencement o£ the meeting to propose a vote of thanks to the Chairman for his services during the year, but he

had taken the wind oat of his sails. He wished him to take the will for the dee<l. The business of the meeting was then proceeded with. Minutes of the last meeting wero read and confirmed. Tenders : Waitoa Road : Several tenders were received for the formation of this road (near Stranges') but they were all informal with the exception of a tender from W. J. MacCormick, £28 1 25, for the first section of the work. This tender was accepted, and it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Dearie, to call for fresh tenders for section No. 2. Outward Correspondence • The Clerk rca-1 the outward correspondence, amongst which was a letter to the mnnager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, with reference to the. extension of the bank overdraft to £500. The Waihi Biidge : A letter was read from Mr Vesey Stewart, asking Com.cil to re-consider the erection of the Waihi bridge, and requesting Council to forward their resolutions in the matter to to him. He was endeavouring to introduce foreign capital in the distiict, and if he could report that this bridge hail been constructed it would greatly facilitate his scheme. A telegram was also read from the Public Works Department, asking why the estimate of £200 differed so widely from the estimate given prefiously in 1883. The Chairman said he w:i3 going to suggest that a committee be appointed to view the site for the bridge, and then reply to tho telegram. Cr Robson recommended that the committee consist of the Chairma ', Engineer, Or Quinn, Corbett, and himself, to view the spot and then reply to the telegram. If the bridge oould be erected for £250, ho had no donbt the Government would contribute £200. To guard against this in the future he would pioposo that a notice board be erected, cautioning persons against committing this offence. He also proposed that £5 be voted to clear road from Paeroa-Tauranga roa 1 to Goldfields boundary around Waitekanri road. Seconded by Cr Deaile and carried. Te Aroha- Paeroa Road : Cr Quinn moved and Cr Strange seconded, that an additional £20 be expended on tho bud portions of the Te Aroha-Paeroa road beyond the last contract. The portion of the road to be. improved is from the Te Aroha side of the gorge to the township. Turner's Hill : It was resolved, upon the motion of Cr Nash, seconded by Cr Quinn, that the foreman of works repot t at next meeting on the cost of foiming Turner's Hill. June: ion Road: Cr Robson moved that draining on the Junction Road be carried out at a cost not to exceed £2. lie stated this work would mainly consisted of clearing out existing drains. Seconded by Cr Quinn and carried. Drainage Work : Uhe question of the formation cf the outfall drain near Mr Thorp's w.is deferred until next meeting.
