ROBBERY IN SOUTH MEL-

About 11 o'clock on Saturday night, Miss Rnasell, cashier to Mr Webb, butcher in South Meloourne, was carrying about £111 home in a black bay for safety, and asked her bi other to accompany her. , When near a house in Raglan-street, the brother was suddenly knocked down fiom behind. Miss Russell was stiuck, and the bag was snatched fioui her. Two men ran off. The brother speedily recovered and gave chase. With the assistance of pas&ers-by he caught one man, but the other with the bag got away. The name on the pocket-book of the prisoner was given as Louis Strickland, Victoria Hotel, corner of Lonsdale and Russell sbieets The matter was placed in the hands ot the detectives. Whilst the latter were at the hotel making inquiries, a young man came to the side, door and asked "if Tom Stiickiand wa- in?' 1 He was detained and searched, and as a sum of £53 11s wa a found in hib pockeos the detective& oon sidered themsehes justified in arresting him. On this the man made a confession, which threw an entirely new light on the affair. He said that his name was George Strickland, a native of Langford, near Launceston, and that he had been employed for about three months as a journeyman butcher in Mr Webbs shop. The robbery was planned by him and earned out with the assistance of his brother, Lou b Strickland, who came o\erwith him from Tasmania, and had sincfe been working as a shearer at Wagga Wagga. Strickland was, taken to South Melbourne and confronted with Miss Russell, who was much distressed at finding ,that the attack had. been the work of a fellow employee. The other man, on hearing of the second airest, confessed that he was Louis Strickland, and that he had shared in the lobbeiy.
