THE MELBOURNE GUP. MENTOR WINS. S PADE GUINEA AND ENSIGN KILLED. Melbourne, November 6.

Beautefui, summer weather was experienced foy the second day's racing of the Victoria Racing Club. The attendance was the largest ever seen at Flemington, and it is estimated that fully 150,000 people were present. Among tho"-o present were Sir H. B. Loch, Governor of Victoria ; Sir William Robinson, Governor of South Australia ; Lord Carrington, Governor ot New South Wales ; and Lord Hastings. The crowd on bho lawn was so great that locomotion was difficult. I There was intense excitement over the Cup, and speculation was rife. Ensign, the winner of the Derby, broko his leg during the Cup race, and both Spade Guinea and Dick .Swiveller broke down. Subsequently it was found that the injuries sustained by Spado Guinea and Ensign while running in the Cup race were so serious that both horses had to be destroyed. The victory of Mentor was received with acclamation, and Mr D. Wallace, the o.vner, who is a very popular sportsman, was heartily congratulated on his success. After a slight delay at the post the flag fell to a good start, Tradition, on the outside, being the first to move, and Melos the j last ; after Tradition came Lord Heading- i ton, Mentor, Malua, Bravo, and Whakawai. Crossing the tan Malua supplanted Tradition, and had Mentor, Spade, Guinea, Newmaster, Bravo, and Whakawai in close attendance. Spade Guinea had charge of affairs as the field swept past the stand, but she was soon dispossessed of the advantage by Melos, their closest attendants being Newmasfcer, Mentor, Bravo, Dick Swiveller, and Whakawai. No material alteration took place in the positions until nearing the bridge, when Cyclops and Tradition made a forwai'd movement, and at the Abattoirs the former was leading, with Whakawai, Bravo, Australian Peer, and Ensign following in the order named. Cyclops was still in front, hardly half a mile from home, with Bravo, The Yoeman, Whakawai, Mentor, and Tradition in a cluster at his heels. Ensign had by this time fallen back, having broken his le(r. As they neared the straight Bravo closed on the leader and was the first to round the burn, followed by Cyclops, Whakawai, Mentor, The Yeoman, and Tradition. Much the same order was observed until half a furlong from the winning post, when Mentor came with a great run, and secured the lead, both Tradition and

Tho Yeoman at the* samo time passing Bravo, Cyclop?, and Whakawai. Monfcor came on full of running and won by a length and a-half from Tradition, who was a length in front of The Yeoman ; then followed Cyclops, Whakawai, Bravo, Australian Peer, and "Recall, in the order mentioned.
