SPORTING— THE Y. R. C. DERBY.
Hipponn, the Sporting writer of the Auckland Star, referring 1 to the Victorian Derby to tnke place to-morrow says : — "It looks as if the mntch is between Carbine and Melos, and if an unbeaten two-year-old record, and first-class work on the training ground go for anything, the New Zpalander should win, Marshall's filly, Necklet (full sister to Necklace), has been accomplishing such excellent work on Flemington track, that she must take a lot of beating in the Maribyrnong Plate. With Carbine to represent us in the Derby, and Necklet in the Maribyrnong Plate, there is every prospect of Auckland's great reputation as a horsebreeding centre being fully maintained to-morrow.
