PRESENTATION TO DR. CAMPBELL.
Tile employees of Te Kopuru Sawmills on the occasion of the change of ownership resulting from the acquisition of the property by the Kauri Timber Company, resolved to mark their e&teom for and attachment to their former employer, Dr. J. L. Campbell, by presenting him with an address expressive of their sentiment?. The project was taken up enthusiastically and the result was seen in a handsomely illuminated address, the text ot which was as follows : — Kopuru, July 30, 1888. J. Logan Campbell, Esq. Dear sir, — We, the employees at the Kopuru saw mills, hearing that you arc about to relinquish the proprietorship of these mills, desire to express our regard and esteem for you as our employer, and our high appreciation of the energy and capacity displayed in keeping these mills going full time riming the whole period of your proprietorship, thus enabling us to earn a livelihood dm ing a timeol&eveie commercial depi ession. We also than k you for the kind - ness, justice, and integrity which have ever maiked your dealings, and that you may be long spared to enjoy the well-earned fruits of an active, honourable, and unsullied business career, is the hearttolt wish ot your obedient servants. — Signed for and on behalf ot the employees, Adam Bakclay, (Jkokgk Nj'av.' 1 It is noteworthy that of the S3 hands who signed the address, eight had been in the doctor's employ for a peiiod of ten years, lour tor nine years, and 41 for periods of fiom &i\" to ten yeais. The presentation look plar-e on the evening of Tuesday, 17th inst., when Dr. Campbell visited Te Kopuru to bid good-bye to those who had so long been in his employment. Theic w as a large gathering in Te Kopuiu Hall on the occabion — the chair being occupied by Mr F. Matthews. After an o\ertuie by To Kopuru Bia.ss Band, Mr \\ . ,1. Philips sang "Stay With Me, My Darling, Stay." Mr A. Barclay then, in a neat and appropriate speech, presented Dr. Campbell with the address. In returning thanks, Dr. Campbell re icued t.» the good teeling that "had always piovailed between his employees and himtelt. At a later stage' of the proceedings, he gave an address dealing with reminiscences of his early life in the colony. On Friday evening last a very successful ball tendered by Dr. Campbell to the residents of Te Kopuru was given.
