Who so bright us Lady Eva ? Eva, goddess young and Hair, Eyes as da/zlingas the diamonds Tressing back her golden hai*-— Diamonds gracing; youth and beauty, Diamonds flashing everywhere! Is the world, my Lady Eva, Cold and chill as diamonds bright.' Socbt thou no worth and beauty in some lortn, anear to night > No Adonis, young and manly, Pleading hopelessly to night ? Butterflies, my Lady Eva, Scorch their little lairy wings ! Love is but a worthless roamer, What to thee the song he sings I Yet, beware, my littlcjady, Lest j ou scorch your dainty wings ! Fair Adonis— hie th.cc homeward; Cousin Eva weds to-day— Sells herself to wealth, it may he ; Winter cooing to the May ! What is youthful love or honour To the diamond's dazzling ray I So he pities cousin Eva, Praying for her night and morn : In his heart perchance a feeling Thai his Eva's now forlorn :— Does she think a true heart mourneth, Spurns she back the gems in scorn I Yes! lie pities— as the joybells Ring tor her a lying strain ! Well, he knows she is a martyr On the altar-steps ot gain ! How the diamonds glare and glitter O'er her breast of pride and pain ! Who so bright as Lady Eva. Diamonds fUblnng in her hair? Youth and beaut} sold to Mammon, Diamonds gleaming everywhere ! How they blaze and iia-ne and glitter ? O'er tuc martyr ot despair ! Did her poor heart sigh for summer? vV 'erc her hopes with j outh allied .' Did her soul fly out to welcome lie who should have won his bride ? Manly youth— or aged C — Wealth has won a heartless bride ! Hush ! there's silence through the Abbey, Ser\ ants whisper words of dread : Lady Eva, biidc of Mammon, Now is bride to Death instead ! Take the empty phial from her. Lest tiie world knows "why ' she's dead. There in stale sleeps Lady Kva, Close the cold, dead, dreaming eyes ; Only for the danmin» diamonds Youth had won her ior a prize, And poor Babylon of fashion Might have been her Paradise ! W. It.
