In mining there is simply nothing to repoit beyond what has boen given over and over a«ain. The Pavkes' furnace has not yet made a fair start but will probably get under way in a day or two. Mr Walker as you have reported, is getting a reverberator) 7 furnace erected at Waibi. At Owharoa and Waihi the batteries arc both going full time. Mr Farmer had a small trial crushing from a new portion of the Smile of Fortune mine on Saturday last. The result was barely payable. From "Waitekauri comes the news that Birnie and Goodwin, in the Welcome, have some grand ore <>rassod. T.fo tons of. very rich ore lue being prepared for Mr Parkes to treat at Karangahake. SkeneandGther tributeis are getting good dirt still. The Thames representative football team came np on Saturday to play a match with the Paeroa club. Mr W. Or. Nicholls kindly lent his paddock for the occasion. During the first spell the Paeroa men kopt the visitors at their 25 most of the time, but eventually the Thames boys obtained a try. The second spell showed some rough play, and saw the leather over the whole ground. At the call of time the Thames men won by two tries to one. Several new buildings are about to be erected in this district. Mrs J. W. Shaw is putting up lar/?e business premises next the Public Hall, and Messrs W. S. Nicholls, ]£ilis and others, are building in the district. Now that the vexed question of the township 1 enure is likely to bo settled, we may have some better buildings than at present, Miss Lena Gibbons has been appointed as assistant teacher at Paeroa school, vice Miss Baskett. Miss Gibbons is at present attached to Parawai school. No less than three natives have died during the past week, two of them standing high in nuthotity here. A large concourse of natives have attended the tangis, and have kept the township very lively. We arc promised several entertaintainments etc. shortly. Max Rinkle will be here next week, while the Owharoa people are inaugurating their public library in a few days. I understand also that Mr Lovell, of Waiorongomai, is preparing an entertainment for Paeroa, and a fanqy dress ball is advertised for the 9th November.
Mr F. J. Burgess, Mining Registrar at Thames, left on Saturday last for a holiday, the Department having granted him six weeks leave of absence. He purposed leaving by the s.s Wairarapa yesterday for Sydnoy and Melbourne. Mr J, Joidon, Assistant Clerk, lias been gazetted to fill the several appointments held by Mr Burgess, while Mr C. J. Dearie will assist in the offico work. The Commissioner of the Police, the Hon. Mr G-uc'geoii, is at present making his 3'oarly tour of inspection. He visited T,e Arolm on the 11th. inst.
