CHINEMURI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Paeroa, Friday.
Therb is a great death of news just now in- this district, there being little or nothing actually doing in mining. Matters are highly satisfactory at Waihi, and the plant is drafting near completion, Mr Walker is still on first clasB ore in all sections of the mine and a large tonnage is to grass ready for treatment. Barring accidents the advent of November should see the plant in going order. At Owharoa and Waitekauri there is not much doing. At the former place the Farmer's are preparing another crushing and expect a good return. Joe Woods had a small crushing las L < weelc. At Waitekauri, Mr Cooper is arranging preliminaries for the erection of his | plant on the Jubilee claim. A contract jfor felling the bush on the Diamond Gully spur for the purpose of making a road to the Jubilee, will be let to-morrow ' by the County Council. Messrs Murray and Devey, are getting the Te Aroha battery sent down shortly to Paeroa, and the pans and settlers will come from the Thames as soon as the road is ready for their transit. Mr John Ralph arrived at the Thames a day or two ago. It is expected that he has made some arrangements in Melbourne for the opening up of the Mariposa at Waitekauri, Skene is working away in the Saxon, (late Eclipse) and is on good gold. He has a large tonnage of general dirt to grass, but has no means of getting it to the battery. Mr John Read of the Thames, is now in Melbourne, and is engaged in negotiating for capital to work this mine. Good samples of stone have been sent across, and proper plans and reports also. There is much dissatisfaction at the manner in which the Waitekauri Company's mine is, or rather is not, being worked. The tribaters have left for some time, and the battery is closed down. Nothing whatever is being done on the ground, which is one of the richest portions of the field. At Karangahake the furnace is not yet permanently started. I do not know what the delay is about, except that certain very small matters have yet to be done. There is a lot of quartz ready on the hill, which is to be immediately carted down. Mr L. Melhose visited the Adeline yesterday, and informs me that a manager is to be immediately appointed, and the claim started. A man named Luke McDonald was last night arrested by Constable Mitchell at Paeroa on a charge of vagrancy, He answers the description of Spaulding, the ltinatic that escaped from the asylum last month. When Constable Mitchell opened the cell door this morning the prisoner made a rush and escaped in his shirt, but was immediately recaptured. Mr N. Kenny, J.P., to-day sentenced him to fourteen days in Shortland Gaol.
