TOWN BOARD ELECTION.
Considerable interest was manifested in To A roh a yesterday with respect to the election of five Commissioners for the ensuing two years. There were eight candidates nominated ; only two of whom, Messrs lidbson (chairman), and Ilott, were members of the outgoing Board, and both those candidates, together with Mr Dowries, wero the defeated ones on the present occasion ; it being asserted all three were opposed to the formation of a Borough, believing the movement premature. Indeed, the occasion of the present election was utilised by the " would-be' 7 Boronghites to foster to the utmost the feeling of dissatisfaction with the Town District form of government (which has sprung up ever since PiaUo Comity Council saddled the whole cost of the maintenance of that portion of the County road within the Town District upon the Board), and they worked most energetically to secure the return of Messrs Gallagher, Lipscy, Heathcote, Ebert, and Mills, or as they were termed "theßorough ticket," in which they were successful. Mr J. M. Murray acted as substitute for Mr Crutnp, the Returning Ufficer, who was unable to conduct the election personally ; whilst Messrs Hartwell and Cocks officiated as scrutineers. Te Aroha will have to increase considerably yet, both in population and rateable value, before it can be constituted a Borough ; and we trust therefore the newly-elected Commissioners will administer the Town District Act impartially and to the best advantage, Under the present form of Government the outgoing Board have done much towards the improvement of Te Aroha in the matter of roads and footpaths, and generally in advancing the interests of the district.
