WRECK OF THE COLONIST AT WELLINGTON. Wellington, Sept. 3.
Ar the inquest yestcid.iv on the body of Captain Bailey, ot the schooner Colonist, Chailet> Bums, the only survivor of the wieck, gave evidence, the paiticulars being aame as ah eudy telegraphed. Evidence was adduced that the signalman reported to the Harbour Board that a vessel was in distress, and that had a steamer been sent on leceipt of pucli information, possibly the lives and the vessel might have been saved. The jury found a verdict of " Accidental death," and added the following 1 lider: — "That we ate of opinion that theie was amptc time from the time the \e<*sel was leported living a signal of distress to have lendeicd assistance by sending .1 steamer fiom Wellington. We llnd that gross negligence was displayed on the pait of the harbour authonties and othetb, and we recommend that a strict ime&tigation be held into the matter " None ol the other bodies came ashore.
