OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

Thk ordinary monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was heM nt tho Council Chamliers, Paeron, on Saturday afternoon last. Present :—: — Crs. W. G. Nicholls (chairman), Dearie, Strange, Robson, Coibetf, Mooro, and Nash. Correspondence : From Adam Elliott, asking for a chain road at WaitcUauri. The advisability of forming this load as asked whs discussed at soni" length, and it was ullimuttly decided, upon the motion of Cr Moore, seconded by Cr RoUon, that the Engiroer be appointed to confer with Messis Elliott, Kinseela, and Ifeitman, and if the result of the investigations be satisfactory the Council to make application to the Warden to have tho road laid off. From J. M. Chambers, drawing attention to tho bad state of the road fo Knnvngahake, pnrt'cnlarly about 15 chains from the bridge. He hiul a lot of heavy machinery and material to cait over it and the present state of the load caused a great deal of inconrenience. Mr Chambers nho stated he was prepared with Mr Dickey to contribute £10 towards the cost of repairing the roadway provided the Council would expend £30 on the work. The Chairman stated that tenders had already been called for this work and that a tender of £H4s per chain had been accepted, so that the matter was disposed of. Petition : A< petition was received from the residents in the Netherton district praying Council to repair the Rangiora Bridge and also the loadway in the district. Upon the motion of Cr Strange, seconded by Cr Dearie, it was resolved to instruct the Engineer to inspect the bridge and line of road and furnish a report for next meeting. From E. K. Cocper, enclosing several telegrams from tho Government ro his application for a road to the Jubilee Claim, and also drawing attention to one from Mr Cadmnn, M.H.R., in which he stated the Government conhl not recognise any communication on this matter except through the Council. Received. From A. J Cadmnn Esq., M.11.R. inclosing a statement of the amounts of tho votes on tho Estimates for the Ohinemuri County Council without subsidy. Received. Maintenance of Roads : Cr. Robson brought forward his motion re^ the maintaining of tho main roads in the Ohinemuri County by contract. He suggestsd that the maintenance of the road from tho Ohinemuri Wharf to the Mack ay town Hotel be let by contract for twelve months from the firsfc of October. Or Moore said he did noc think the letting of tho roads by contract would answer the purpose. In work of a similar character let by the Council in the past, it was found that tho contracts were taken np but nothing whatever done to the roads. If tho Council decided to let tho works by contract the roads should bo put in a fit state of repair beforo they were handed over to the contractors. In reply to a councillor, Cr Robson said he did not intend his motion to apply to bnck roads or the To Aroha road afc present. After somo further discussicn, Cr Moore proposed as an amendment, 'That the consideration of the matter sfcnnd over for three months and that the Engineer be instiucted to inspect the

main roads anil giro an estimate of the repairs-required afc the next meeting of the Council.' This was seconded by Or Donrle. The amendment was carried on the casting- vote of the chairman. By-laws : The Chairman drew attention to thef.ictthatas thespecial meeting for tho passing of tho by-laws had not been attended, the whole matter would have to bo brought forward again in order to comply with tho requirements of tho Aci. Native Lands : It was resolved to communicate with the Minister of Lands asking that the situation of the native land in the Karangahake district published in the Government Gazette of August 23rd as being thrown open for settlement be more clearly defined, as at present the position of the land was not. generally known. To Arohn-Paeroa Road : On tho motion of Or Quinn it was resolved that the Engineer report on the amount of metal now lying on Faeroa-To Aroha road. Tho Engineer was also instructed to peg off the worst portion of tho road so that the work could be let by contract. Expenditure on Road Work : Or Strange moved, 'That an estimate be furnished by tho Clerk to Council of the money expended in day labour on the roads in the various ridings from the lsfc November, 1887, to the Ist September, 1888.' The motion was canied. County Rates : Cr Quinn stated that he had heard many complaints with respect to the unfair manner in which the rates were being levied ; stringent measures being taken in some cases, whilst in others it was stated payment was not enforced. The Chairman said that concessions had been made in one or two cases. Cr Corbett consideied the Council should in future levy rates without making any exceptions. Cr Quinn said that in order to get in the amounts afc present owing, the names of the defaulters should be advertised, and he moved to this effect. Ultimately, however, he withdrew his motion in favour of a proposition by Cr Moore, that notice be given by advertisement that tho names of all those who allowed their rates to remain overdue would be advertised together with the amount duo. This was duly sofonde<l an 1 carried. Registration of Cattle : ft was^ilecided to establish a resistor of brf»n<Tg of cattle in tho Gohlfnld District, Or Coibett moving, 'That a rei>ht»M- book be opened, and that a copy be kept for inspection at tlu Co'in -il ottice-3, the fee for inspection to be cm 1 shilling.' Financial Commit I. -c's Rcpoit: The financial committee's report was submitted, which showed a net balance tor expenditure of £117 2s lid, together with cash in hand to the amount of £24 Ids 3 1. Accounts to thi 1 amount of £169 13s 6d were recoinmiMidcd for payment. On the motion ot Ci Robson, seconded by Or Stiange, tlio icport was adopted.
