THE PACIFIC MAIL SERVICE. A SYDNEY OPINION.

Sydney, Au^uat 16. The "Daily Telegraph "in an article on the position of the mail service via San Francisco, points out that it is valueless to Australia as a means of mail communication. Its advantages in the way of social and i commercial intei course were, however, admittedly great, and it would be a nv'fetake to discontinue the service for the sake of avoiding a small annual payment. What Australia wants chiefly is* intercourse, not with Canada, but with the United States. The " Telegraph " considers that it is only a question of time when New Zealand will transfer to the direct liners the subsidy now paid to the San Francisco service. Another contract for the transmission of mails via the United States may be signed, but it will probably be the last. The " Telegraph " suggests, as a means of securing the continuance of the San Francisco service, that the cost of maintaining it should be' distributed over the different colonies of Australasia.

Cairo, August 13. The Khedive of Egypt has protested against the annexation by Italy u$ Massowah and Zulla.
