OLEOMARGARINE IN VARIOUS LIGHTS.
The Supremo Court of the United States in a Pennsylvania case, has affirm*, d (soys an American paper) the power of a Slubo to prohibit by lavv tho manufactuie or sale •f oleomargarine ; whether that pioduct be good, bad, or indifferent, healthful or unhealthful. In the city of New York, the Recorder has sentenced to the penitentiary, for three months, a wealthy giocer who pleaded guilty to an indictment, charging him with selling oleomargarine. This* irf the first case ot imprisonment under tho law. Heretofoio lines only have been imposed. The State Board of Health of Massachusetts have made a lcpoit to the Legislature of that State, in which oleomargarine as an atticle of food it favourably regarded, and very little weight is given to the prejudice in fa\our or butter, except as a "prejudice," and because in some cases butter may be moio palatablo to invalids and others than its substitute. The report states frhut the oleomargarine was in every case found made of wholesome substances, that no adulteration with unwholesome articles was discovered, and on the whole a, very good " send off" is given to oleomaigarine. In the decisions and report above named, a wide range of opinion is made manifest. Nothing is said in either of one of the main points in the issue, which is the sale of the •übstitute butter, as butter, without the branding or statement necessaiy to inform the purchaser as to what material he ia really obtaining. The results on the whole strengthen the claims made by dairymen.
