August 1, 1867.
To-day is the anniversary o* an important evont in the history of Auckland, and yet it is not being celebrated in any way. It was on the Ist of Aug«*fc, 1867, that the Thames goldfield was proclaimed," and today therefore marks the " coming of age" of the field. The proclamation was, we understand, issued by Dr. Pollen, in. the absence of the Hon. Jas. Williamson, who was then Superintendent of the province of Auckland. The first payable gold was* gob in the Shocover claim on 10th August, 1567, by Messrs Hunt, Clarkson, Cobley and White: and on the 12th of the same month the first miners' rights were . issued by Mr James Mackay, the goldfields commissioner. It is cheering" to find at the 21st anniversary of the goldfields, matters ore looking much livelier than-i they have done for several years back, and hopes are entertained that, as at the first opening of the field, the activity in mining matters may cause a marked revival in industrial activity and in the general prosperity of Auckland. We congratulate the Thames on having attained! its majority, and we believe that the field i has a great future before it in the sturdy manhood upOft which it now enters. " Star," August 1.
" What is your idea of a true gentleman, Jack ?" "A true gentleman always laughs at fcho joke of a story and never says lie.; heard it before."
