MINING NEWS.

The following 1 interesting particulars respecting a trial test of tailing from the Colonist G. M. Co.'s property, Waiorongomai, have been furnished by the Manager : — The low level is now in to our boundary. This level has carried gold for the past 60 feet. There is now to grass from it about 60 tons of ore, which I purpose treating, and passing the tailings over the two Frue Vanners now temporarily erected in the Te Aroha Silver and Gold Mining Company's mill. I have treated one ton by the above process, and herewith attach return from same. Ido not think the whole of the ore to grass is as good as the ton treated, but am quite sure it is of a good payable quality. The winze from the top level to the low level is now down 25 feefc, and the reef shows gold in each breaking down. This winze will require to be sunk a further distance of 50 feet to connect with the low level. There will be about 30 tons good crushing dirt from this winze and the upper level, making about 80 tons in all. Trial test Colonist ore :— Treated 20001bs, less moisture 6 per cent., equal IBBolbs nett. Time in passing through 5-stamp battery, 2] hours, equal to 8 1728.2000 tons in 24 hours with five head stamps, dropping at the rate of 54 per minute. Results : Tailings, with moisture deducted, 16711bs ; concentrates, do., 521bs, eqinl 2 3.10 per cent. : coarse material from mortfir, 75lbs ; slimes, moisture deducted, 821bs : total, 1880 lbs. Tailings (assay value) : Silver, loz, 4dwts 12grs, value 4s 3d ; gold, loz 7dwt<? 18grs, value, £s lls : total value, £5 15s 3d. Settled Slimes (assay value) : Silver 3ozs Bdwts 14grs, value 12s ; gold, 19dwts 14grs, value £3 ISs 4d ; total value, £4 10s 4d. Coarse Material from Mortar (assay value) : Silver, 3ozs Odwts llgrs, value 10s 7d ; gold, 4ozs 6dwts 13.?rs, value £17 6s 2d ; total value, £17 6s 9d. Crude Ore (assay value) : Silver, 2ozs 15dwts 12grs, value 9s 7d ; gold, 2ozs 2dwts llgrs, value £8 9s 10d : total value, £8 I9s sd. TUI. Champion Lo c le G. and S. M. Co.'s property : — The mine manager reports that the men aro now employed in driving north and south on the reef in the low level, and that the reef is improving 1 in appearance as driven on southwards, and generally looks well. About GO feet of driving has now been accomplished sou f hwards.

KARANGAHAKE. Work in connection with the new furnace, now being erected (in the building where the La Monte furnace formerly stood), under the supe rintendanco of Mr Alex. Parkes, is progressing satisfactorily, and it is expected the work of erecting the furnace will be completed this week. It will take about a fortnight to season the brickwork before the furnace would be in a fit state to ' fire up' to treat quartz. Everything is, however, progressing ""satisfactorily.
