Auckland, July 16. C.vwhki \. — The quart/ being obtained trom the winze m progieba on the hangingwall of the main reef at the intermediate level is shaping for an ounce to the load at the battery. The drive at No. 4 level is penetrating an excellent channel of .sandstone, and the leader maintains its former i-Lse and appeal ance. The manager reports : The tee dine on No. 4 level i* now m a distance of 70 feet trom the ero-ssuut. 1, would recommend th<it the tec chive be extended other 10 ieex, wi^h the lock bore before starting the cio s scut to No. 7 winze. This would make the total distance of the tee drive fiom the cio^scut 80 leet. When this i» completed I will put two men to sink a winze on the hangingwall leader, from No 2 level down to the eastern inteimcdiate level. When the above 80ft. is completed, the face ot the tee drive will be close to the boundary. The leader in the face of the drive i& lather .split up at present into small white stringers, and it is still inclining away towards the boundary. There was? no gold seen when breaking it down yesterday. In the winze on the main reef in the intermediate level, theie is a small stiingeron the hangingwall of the reef half an inch in thickness, in which dabb and colours of gold weie seen when breaking it down yesterday and to-day. Saxox. — There i& no change to report. Crushing is shaping fairly. Monthly Cold Return. — Dining the past month the amount of gold obtained in j the various districts was as> follows : — Thames, 3,0780z 4dwt ; Te Aroha, 2140z 7dwt; Ohineinuri, 4260/ 18dwt ; Coromandel, 3980/> 19dwt Cai*eoonia>'. — The prospects of this mine have improved considerably ot late. Good headway is being made with the sinking of the win /.eat No. 2 level on Rowes leader, and a depth of 32 feeb has been attained. Colours of gold are observed distributed through the quartz almost every time the leader is broken down, and there seems but little doubt as- to its payableness. A crosscut has been commenced at No. 2 level to pick up what is known as Hodge's leader, and it is expected that it will be intersected in 15 feet of driving. The trial crushing of 10 loads from the No. 1 reef at No. 1 level, which, it might be mentioned, is 7 or 8 feet thick, has been finished, but the blanketings have yet to be put through. The sfcuft' has shaped a little better than expected, but it is doubtful whether the yield will prove payable. Aj-.nu.RNrA. — There are about 15 loads of quartz on hand for the Company, and crushing will be commenced in about a week's time. CoftoMANjjja,, July 14. Tokatjsa. — Cailson and paity, from No. 1 block, have obtained another 101b of picked stone, making 321b on hand. This stone comes from the same leader a& mentioned in my last report, being the footwnll part of the No. 3 and main reef, just under the blow. This reef has now produced gold
at so many different places along its course in the Royal Oak and Tokatea mines, that it; should be opened at a lower level. McHalpin and .party, from No. 7 tribute, have had a crushing of their No. 1 stuff, which yielded 115oz at the battery. This, along with the stone takeu by the Company, gives 121oz from three tons stuff. They have still one ton of No. 2 stone to be treated. Stelle and Dyer, from No. 8 tribute, havo crushed one ton of general quartz and 101b of picked bfcone for 38oz lOdwt of retorted gold. — Jso. Bknnky, Mine Manager. Royal Oak. — Since last report the reef has again been broken down, and the rise timbered up. The reef is full ot minerals, phowing good loose prospects and also showing gold in the stone. The leads are not properly together yet, but from the appearance of the ground, there is every indication of the icefs making gold when the junctions come properly together. — Peter Rial).
