HARSH TREATMENT OF ORPHANS.

Christciiurcji, July 12. At a meeting of the Cbaiitable Aid Board to-day an animated di&cussion took place re the Lytt'4ton Orphanage. The Chnuman oi the Oi plumage Committee stated that complaints ha\mg been made that a girl 14 years of age had been be\ciely punished he, with the ilev. Mr Chambers, visited the Orphanage and examined into the matter. They tound that the governess, under - master, as well a& Mr Brovvnlee, headmaster, had been in the habit of inflicting punishment. This had now been altered as too severe treatment. The bruises on the childien showed that some undue violence had been used. Other members stated that the children had been very severely caned, as was shown b^ the marks and .'<cavs on their hands. It appeared that on May 9bh the committee requested the master and matron to resign. A month later, however, by the casting \ote of the chairman, the committee carried a motion that they were to be permitted to remain. It appeared that the members of the staff were much dissatisfied with the treatment they received from the master and matron. The Board adjourned the matter for a fortnight, to enable the members to look over the evidence taken at the inquiry into the subject held by the Committee.
