MINING NEWS.

Thames, June 28. New Manukau.—The mine manager reports : "I cleaned up and retorted lost week atfcer crushing 20 tons of dirb from the slopes of No. 5 lode for the good payable return of 69oxn. of retorted gold. The dirt crushed better than I expected, for I got very little picked stone when breaking it out. The last slope is in land cast^ of wime, bub before this is all out I think Mulligan's leader will be payable, for it is looking better every sbope, and the chances are that we shall have a patch of gold in this block after a while, for it crushed well in the level above and u good bit of picked stone was got." Camijeia.—The mine manager reports : The drive at No. 4 level holed to the bottom of the winze on Stiturday last. There is now good ventilation at this level. The quart/ broken out from here is kindlylooking, carrying nice-looking mineral and everything that could bs desired for gold. The winze on the main reef in the intermediate level is down a depth of 11 feet. There are 6 inches of splendid mineral on the hangingwall of the reef, in which colours of gold are seen when breaking down the reef. 14 loads of tailings have been put through the bcrdans during the week for 290z of amalgam. Saxox.—The mine manager reports. The rise above No. 3 level is up 60 feet; the country is slightly disturbed, but shows about 18 inches of quartz in which gold is occasionally seen. The leading stope hillward is along 80 feet on the footwall portion and 70 feet on hangingwall portion. The former is 15 inches thick and the latter 12 inches, and goldis frequently seen in both. The second stope is in 40 feet from the rise, and carries both portions. There are about two feet of crushing dirt in this stops showing gold and carrying excellent mineral The leading stope seaward is up to the break and the second nearly so. The crosscut from this level to cut the No. 1 footwall leader is in 28 feet and within a few feet of the leader. The two stopes on this leader have been advanced about nine feet each; good colours: of gold are seen in the quartz, which is six inches thick. On hangingwall reef the third stope is 122 feet; fourth, 103; fifth, 96 ; and sixth. 51 feet in irom the junction ; the reef averages 15 inches, uncl shows gold when broken. On footwall reef the seventh stope is within 10 feet of boundary. The eight stope is 141 feet and ninth 105 feet in from rise ; here the reef is also 15 inches thick and shows a little gold. Amalgam on hand to date 2300z lSdwt.; the greater part of this is from the Caledonian battery. New Aujukxta.—The mine manager reports : In the stopes going west the leader is fully two feet in thickness, and a welldefined leader of a promising character, carrying fair minerals, but, so far, but little gold has been seen at this end. On the ea&tern end of the stopes the leader is not quite to large, but still shows gold more freely. There is a junction some 15 feet ahead of the present face, where 1 am in hopos that something better will be met with. 1 am getting out another crushing from the eastern stopes. Tributers : Jobe and party will shortly be crushing, also liwin and party. Christy, Climo, and Henderson arc all getting oul payable quartz. Cambkia.—Good headway is being made with the sinking of the winze on the main reef at the intermediate level, and it has already attained a depth of 12 feet. The hangingwall portion of the lode carries minerals of a very favourablede&cription, and colours ot gold are seen in the quarto every breaking down. At No. 4 level, work is being pushed a-head as quickly as possible. As already repoited, tho cross-cub lias holed through to the winze sunk from No. 4 level, and the ventilation is now all that could be desired. The manager has started driving towards the boundary, after which a crosscut will be commenced to intersect No. 7, and the other leaders worked so successfully in the levels above. Caledok ian. —Colours of gold were again seen to-day when breaking down the leader in the winze in progress underneath Rowe'b tribute. Judging by tho amount of gold observed in the quart/, ib is iusb possible thab the stuff will prove payable. The winze is down 15 feet. Saxon*.—Payable quart/ continues to come to hand from the stopes over No. 4 level, bub there is no change to report. The contractors have resumed work in the crosscut at No. 4 level, and are penetrating on cweilcnt channel of bandstone,
