DEFENCES IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

The Uovcrnmont havo decided bo carry out the recommendations made by MajorGeneral Schaw, in his report on the defence* of the colony, almost in their entirety. The numbers of the I'eimancnt Artillery and Volunteer Inianlry are to be largely increased, and a new permanent corps of Submarine JSJinovh ib be formed in addition to the existing volunteer regiment. A corps of Permanent and Volunteer Mounted Infantry is to be formed, and rifle clubs arc to be established all ovor the country in the place of the present volunteer reserves. The Wolverene is to be recommissioned for use as a training-ship for the Naval Volunteers and Naval Brigade, and new fortifications are to be constructed for the bobber defence of Sydney Harbour and the approaches to the city. The Government proposals involve an increased cost for personnel alone of over £40,000, and it is also intended to expend large ssums on the new fortifications, although no estimates for this part of the scheme have as yet been placed' before Parliament.
