FAIR RENT BILL.
The debate on the motion fot tin. second reading of this rae<isuicwa> le^umed kht evening. Many members -poke on the question, and various objections to the Bill were urged. Mr Carroll disapproved ot it* application to native landh, and especially to the West Coast settlement reserves. Mr Ballance feared that it endangered the hxity Of tenure, and Mr John MoKon/ae objected to the creation of a cumbrous body with poweifc equal to those ot the Supreme Court. Dr. Hodgkinson approved of iho application of the Bill to private property. Mr R. Thompson thought the Bill would cause people to defer payment of their rents in the hope of being able by political agitation to obtain their reduction. Amongst those who supported the measure were Mess>r& Walker, Cowan, Hobbfe, Peacock, White, La wry, Duncan, T. Thompson, O'Conno", Steward, Bu.vton, Kelly, Cadman, Steward, Hutchison, Jones, Samuel and Feldwick. The second reading was ultimately carried, ncm. ro/i.
