OHINEMURI. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
An enquiry into certain allegations, maile by Mr R. A. Wight, of Komntn, against Constable A. J. Mitchell, is now being held before Major Gudgeon, at Paeroa. The charge is [that he did exceed 1)13 duty by endeavouring to work up evidence agnirst Charles Wight, son of Mr R. A. Wight, when charged with rape upon the person of tho wife of Iloera to Mimiha. Tho Press were not admitted, as Major Gudgeon thinks it is simply a piivate matter between the two parties. During an interview with Major Gudgeon ho stated that although the present onquiry did not bear directly upon tho qucst'o \ as to whether or no Iloera 9!iould bo released from gaol, yet collateral evidence brought out, appeared strongly in favour of the native ; this ho should make known to tho Minister of Justice. The case opened jn Friday, on the return of Constable Mitchell from Auckland, and will probably last for a day or two. Messrs Wi^ht and Logan have boon examined on the one <=ide, and Mr John Mnhor, on behalf of the constable, who hni other witnesses to bring. A meeting was called by Mr Asher Cassrells on Tuesday evening last to publicly express tho thanks of the commnnitytollnn.G.FishprjMc^rsCndman, Whyto, nnd Kelly, M's.ll R , for their assistance in the revocation of the Orderin- Council, placing upper county rivers under the Thames Hurbou.i Board jurisdiction. Mr 0. F. Mitchell presided, and there was a poor attendance. The following resolution was unanimously carried :—": — " That the residents of Ohinemuri thank most heartily the lion Minister of Marine, and Messrs Cadmnn, Kelly nnd Whyte, M's.ll R., for their assistance to the Minister in causing tho withdrawal of the Proclamation, giving tho Thames Harbour Board control of the Ohinemuri and Thames rivers." Mr E. Qninn proceeded to the Thames on Monday, on matters relating the floating of the Arizona mine at Marototo, of which Messrs Shaw, Quinn, Shea, Byrne, and others aro owners. It is understood that the claim has been placed at a fair price. A parcel of ore is to be sent to Sydney from the mine. Mr Chas. Harley opens his store and butchery at Waihi on Monday next. The Snowflake Minstrels held a successful entertainment at the Pncroa Hall on Thursday evening last.
