THE CODLIN MOTH.

A iauci meeting- of Birkenhead residents was held in the Zion Hall on Saturday c\ening, under the auspices of the Bii ken" head and Kortheote Fruitgrowers' Association, tor the purpose of considering the Codlin Moth Bill. Mi F l'mter, senior, occupied tlie chair. The Secretary lead a paper on the subject under notice tiom the pen ot Mr H. J. Hawkins. It was pointed out that the presence of tho codlin moth had not diminished tho fruit suppb, the local market having been moiv abundantly supplied during tlua season than ever prc\iously. Consignments of good sound fruit from distant part* did not in many cases realise bufUcicnt to pay cost of packing and carriage, and yet it was proposed to impose a heavy tax on the unfortunate growers. It was never thought advisable to legislate upon the codlin moth in England ov the Northern States of America, and the writer hoped that fruit orower* both North and South of Auckland would btrenuously oppose so obnoxious and unjust an act in New Zealand by inundating the Upper House wifch petitions against it. Mr W. Thomson baid he thought they were working in the dark, not having had the opportunity of having studied the Act. AJr A. Wilson, senior, said that he was convinced that the pest would continue its lavagos, notwithstanding the imposition^©* heavy taxes and the appointment of inspectors to examine orchards. It was eventually resoh ed that the I< ruit growers Association instruct Mr Button to telegraph to the Parliamentary representative^ tho district with the object of getting tho Bill delayed. A desire was also expressed for co opera tkm by the Auckland districts, and it has resolved to adjourn till Juno 2nd lor furtercontsiduratiou of tho subject.
