OHINEMURI. (From Our own Correspondent).
TnERE is a great dearth of news this week, everything being extremely quiet. The only iteftn worth recording is the extremely good returns just received by the Rose tributers, (Karangahake), Messrs Devon and Richards of 52£oz lOdwt gold from 1G tons. I hasten also to correct an error which crept into my last 'report, in which it was stated that the WoodstocK and Konilworth were the only mines at work at Karangahake. I understand that there are ten men employed on the Ivanhoe and Truro mines, besides tri outers in other claims. The Diamond directors are about to send a ton of ore to Auckland as a trial parcel. The- " Trial " cutter arrived in Paeroa to-day (Friday), with the last lot of the Dart machinery. A farewell party and dance was given to Miss Mary Blakely on Wednesday evening last by the ladies of Paeroa, on the occasion of her severing her connection with the school, where she has been held in great estimation. Miss Edith Basketfc will commence her duties as assistant teacher at the Paeroa school next week, The Chairman of Ohinemuri County Council has received official notification of the revocation of the Order in Council extending the limits of the Thames Harbour Board to Ohinemuri. It is now likely that the residents on the river side between Hikutaia and Kopu will petition the Governor to constitute a River Board distiict within those limits, the same to be afterwards amalgamated with the existing Ohinemuri River Con- | servancy Board. The contractor for the metalling of the roads in the Paeroa riding is making good headway with the work. The footpaths within the township are, however, in a deplorable state. Mr Seymour T. George is now in Paeroa on business concerning the Wailri mine. A day or two ago we gave the net cash return that the Marototo Gold Mining Company received from the 9cwt of picked stone sent to Adelaide for trcatmont, which yielded nt the rate of £IGB per ton net, We have now to hand the approximate value of the last shipment of 11 tons, which Mr Anderson, one of the directors, took with him to Sydney, and from the estimate of the bulk assay made before its shipment, we have no doubt that by this our New South Wales friends will begin to feel that they have got hold of a good thinur. The value per ton as near as possible is r Gold, £30 ; silver, £20 3s 8d per ton, or a gross of £50 3s 8d per ton. The following is the extract from the Sydney Herald of the 22nd inst : "The Le-al Manager of the Marototo Gold and Silver Mining Company reports that a bulk assay by Professor Dixon from 1 1 tons of Marototo ore shipped to Glasgow and Germany yielded at the rate of HOoz ldwt 10gr silver, and 7oa lOdwt gold to the ton." — Auckland Herald.
Often curious combinations are found in the adveitising columns of our newspapers. Tho following 1 is the announcement made by a recently bereaved wife in a Melbourne paper ;— • Died on the 11th inst., at his shop, No. 20, Greenwich street Mr Edward Jones, much respected by all who knew or dealt with him. As a man, he was amiable ; as a hatter, upright and moderate. His virtues were beyond all price, and bis boaver hats were only 3s each. Tic has left a widow to deplore his loss and a large stock to be sold cheap, for 'the benefit of his family. He was snatched to the other world in the prime of life, just has ho had concluded an extensive purchase of felt, which ho pot t>o cheap that his widow can supply hats at a more reasonable rate than any house in tho city. His disconsolate family will carry ou business with punctuality."
