MINING NEWS.
GOLD FIND IN MARYBOROUGH. Blenheim, May 28. A discovery of gold is reported about midway between Blenheim and Picton in a gully leading from Mahakipawa to Speed's Valley. The gold is nuggetty and of .splendid quality. Auriferous indications are said to have been traced at distances of .seven miles. The Warden to-day granted a special claim of three and a quarter miles in length along the Wakamarina River to Mr S. J. Macalister conditionally on a company being formed with capital of not less than £20,000, that £3,009 worth of plant be placed on the ground and 40 men employed within nine monhts. I believe tlu^ is the largest special claim yet granted in the colony. It is proposed to dredge the river.
THE GOLD FIND AT BLENHEIM. Where the gold was found by Pattersons Party in Cullen's Gully is three miles from M aluluhawa. It is difficult of access except by boat or going through private property. From l'eliable sources I learn all ranges show strong auriferous indications. The boundaries of Makamarina goldfield do nofc extend so far and it will be well to extend them or proclaim another goldfield embracing most of the ranges in Pelorous Sound which are proved in various direcrions to be auriferous. The results obtained from some stone forwarded home from Endeavour inlet, Antimony Mine should make the Government very chary of .selling any land at all in ranges or gullies in sounds, through Patterson and party, have taken up five mens ground, and 1 hear 40 or 50 men are now out prospecting. There is nothing whatever to warrant the rush. The nuggets found are grand samples of precious metal.
REEF FOUND AT KOMATA CREEK. Thames, May 28. Messrs Birch and Baker, two well-known prospectors, arrived in town this afternoon, and report having found a nice-looking reef at the head of the Komata Creek, about six miles from the County Main Road. They inform me that they have traced the oub crop of the reef on the surface for 20ffc and can obtain good, loose prospects of gold. They have marked out a claim of 30 acres. Camkria. — The main reef was cut to-day in the crosscut at No. 4 level. No quartzlias yet been broken down. CvMMtiA. — Mr R. McDonald Scott visited ihib mine yesterday, and was, I am informed, well pleased with its prospects. The crosscut at No. 4 level has been extended almost the necessary distance to intersect the main reef, which should be to hand any day. The country continues an excellent sandstone. Saxox. — The contractor for driving 550 feet just above the present No. 5 level m this mine has the work of cutting out the chamber well under way. As soon as this is finished driving will be started, and the reef should be met with in about 50 feet. Its course will then be followed until the drive arrives underneath where the winze nearest the shaft was sunk fiom No. 4 level. Colours of gold are still s?een in the quartz in the slopes, and the stuff is shaping fairly at the batteries. About 150ozs. of amalgam have accumulated. Noui'OLK. — The trial parcel from this mine yielded at the rate of sdwts gold to the ton, w hich is not payable, although the i eet is two or three feet wide.
