RETHAMES HARBOUR BOARD.
Messrs W. i\ Chepmell, W. G. Nicholls, and J. A. Dobson,-— Chairmen of Piako and Ohinemuri County Councils and Te Aroha Town Board respectively, and delegates appointed by these local bodies to represent them, re proposed River Board for conservancy of the Upper Thames rivers upon the withdrawal of the obnoxious Proclamation, granting extended jurisdiction to Thames Harbour Board-- had their first meeting at the office of the Te Aroha Town Board on last Thursday afternoon, Mr Dobson in the chair. j The whole question was discussed at considerable length, and the several Acts looked up, the result arrived at being as follows : That after carefully considering fho whole question, the delegates are of opinion that it would be impossible to obtain the number of signatures required by Section G ot the River Boards Act 1884, (which states that new districts rnny be proclaimed,, subject to «i petition being 1 presented signed by not less than two thirds of the ratepayers, etc.,) but are unanimous in requesting (iovernment to withdraw the recent * Proclamation by which the Thames Harbour Board were granted control of the up country rivers, etc \ and the delegates are of opinion, that Ohinemuri County Council, having already been constituted a River Board, is sufficient to meet the requirements of the case, and may be entrusted with the conservation of the rivers affected. li> was further resohed that a letter to the foregoing effect be forwarded to the Minister of Marine, and also similar letters to Messrs Cadman andJWhyte, M's.H.R., requesting them to assist in having the wishes of the delegates carried into effect. This concluded the brjf mess.
