THE BROKEN HILLS MAROTOTO SWINDLE.

Mr J. A. Pond sends us (Auckland Herald, May IOUO the following letter, which, it will be observed, makes very serious charges :—: — 1U% — In further reference to the Marototo Broken Hills mine in your today's issue you give a report of an assay made by myself. As this report has been materially altered, I send you herewith a true copy of it as handed to Mr Lee on completion. I vras only acquainted with its falsification lately, and stated the fact in the presence of Mr Northcrolt, to Mr Precious, requiring at the same time an explanation. This gentleman mi 'nit ted that the alteration was made by the secretary of the company and himself, and gave as a reason that the omission of the weight of the bullion delivered was on account of its not being visual with assayers in Sydney to give these weights ; while with regard to the addition of the amount of gold and silver estimated to be present, he stated that in the prospectus it was placed as a footnote, and indicated by an asterisk ; but when I pointed out that I had seen it as you have printed it, in parenthesis in the body of my report, he admitted that it was not right to have altered it in this way On the receipt of the fust sample of ore from Sir Lee I declined to make an s\«say of it on account of the smallness of th* sample, and its doso resemblance to the Marototo ore, which 1 had been extensively assaying for Mr Seaver, and it was not until Air Lee brought more stone and assured me earnestly that it v*as not from the Prospectors' claim nt Marototo, but in " entirely different part of the distiict," that I consented to make an assay. It was also this gentleman's strongly expressed wish that I should make an assay for the lml lion only, giving him the lead, which he required without parting. This I did. but dicw attention to it in my report, so that there should be no misconception. How that report was dealt with I have already shown.— l am, <fee, J, A. POXD. May 18, 18& S.
