RESULT OF STARVATION.
ANi Vokk tclcuiam of April 7th says : —' Hans tStackricd and his wife, Fannie, a handsome woman of 21 years, took doses of poison early this- morning, and died within an hour of each other after being removed to the St. Vincent Hospital. The husband was a Polish Jew. He had been out of work for some time. His wife has been compelled to pawn almost everything s-hc had of any Finally, the father, mother, and a iivc-months-old baby boy had to live on a crust of bread picked from street refuse barrels. Tho couple lived in one room only. About midnight a Mrs Dcriing heard an unusual noise in Stackried's room. She wont out into tho hallway and there saw Stackiicd, who looked as though he was intoxicated. His face was ghastly pale. His eyes had a wild glare and large beads of perspiration stood out on his face. Fearing that the man might attack her, Mrs Deiring rushed back into her room and slammed the door. At two o'clock Stackried opened tho door, and upon Mrs Dcrring opening it, he said, ' We have taken poison, my wife and I.' Then he suddenly fell to the floor. Entering the Stackried's room, Mts Dcering found the wife lying on tho sofa/ as if dead, w ith her babe clapped to her breast,. In a moment- or so shd opened her eyes and said faintly: 'Go for the police ; we are dying.' An ambulance was Mimmoncd, and both were removed to the hospital. Tho husband died at five o'clock, and hi« wife an hour later. Tho babe was al once transferred to fcho care of Matron Wobb at police head-quarters.'
