The stone referred to, which \vat> found between Manaia and Merruiy Bay, yielded 10 o/s 15 dwts of gold worth L"3 per ounce. The following pai Liculars of the district and the mining at present in progress there will probably be of interest : — The Maori settlement of Manaia is connected by a good road with the Tiki and Coromandel Township, from which latter place it is ten miles distant, the principal mine belongs to Messrs Blackman and Raih'nb, situated on the top of a ridge, and connected with the settlement by a good bridle track. The shareholders are now sending some 20 tons of quartz to Coromandel, which is expected to yield about 10 ounces per ton — the last three or four crushing^ having averaged about 8 or 9 ounces per ton. On account of the excesbive charges for conveyance, etc., the quartz ib carefully selected and only the bcstbtone is sent. The charges for crushing and conveyance amount to £3 4s 6s per ton, made up as iollows : Sledging from mine to Manaia per ton, £1 2s ; freight from Manaia to Coromandel, 12s ; carting from Wharf lo battery, 10s ; crushing, 12s 6d ; incidental expenses, Ba. Jones and party own a claim adjoining Blackmore's, the crushing average from which hab been 2oz 6dwt per ton. Immediately below comes Lynch and party's claim. ThebO men have followed a three-foot reef to a depth of 80 feet, and from a battery trial ot 11 tons, 22uz of gold were obtained, There are also twelve prospectors at work, most of whom are on gold, and earning a living by mortar crushings, until the authorities make tledge tracks to enable them to get their ore down to the battery.
