MORRINSVILLE. (FROM OUR OWN CO RRESPON DENT.)
Tins usual monthly mcrtintf of the Waitoa Road Board was held o» 31st nit. Present--- Messrs Chepmell, (chairman), Seddon, Horrell, ami Burnett. The Engineer reported having made u careful examination of the Wftitoa bridge, and thought that with new handrails, and other slight repairs the bridge would be safe for probably two yeai's. Mr Chepmell gave notice that at the next meeting he would move: That the resolution authorising the building of a new bridge be rescinded. A sum of £20 was voted towards forming and gravelling a portion of the main road near Te Aroha. The other business was of an unimportant character. A good story is told of how one of onr local boys was " had " at Tauwhare on Monday last. It appears that the half milo race was 1)/ &omy mistake or other, left out of the programme. The committee met however and decided to have a Inlf-mile race, post entiy. They said thefirst prize would be a silver medal, valued at about 3(te ; the second worth nearly as much. Five came forward to conte°t, an entrance fee of 2s was charged, and the race started, " our boy " being scratch. When about half the distance had been accomplished some of the runners became aware of the real value of the medal, and three of them stopped ; (lie other two continued, u onr boy '" winning. Judge of his disgust when he was asked to choose between a watch chain appendage worth ss, and a cigar and cigarcttee holder combined, worlhperhnps 7s f>d. Thewir.nernotbpin^ a smoker had to take the former. He says befote he contests for a modal at Tauwhare again he will see the prize first.
