THE PANAMA CANAL. PUSHING ON THE WORK.
Tin ".Stiu- " and " Hcrulcl "' of January 28th s;u —''The Panama Canal reckons one moic contracting hnn, that of Et/inger, I)epl>ieu.\, C>alticr and Co., who arc charged with the construction of the locks. Thes c gentlemen arrived on the isthmus on December 28th by the Pacific Mail steamer Newport, and lost no time in reporting to the dircctor-gencial ot the canal, who did j all in his power to hasten the installation ot the new enterprise. Without losing time the tlnce members of the film betook themselves, to the ditlcrent points where the locks arc to be constructed. The operations have commenced at the iifth (UM-ion — La Boca and Corozal — and are continued e\ery day in the different di\ wonh of the lino of the canal. We are assiued that the contractors have met the same /cal everywhere and the same good will to smoothe the difficulties that were consequent on .such a hurried possession of the ehantiers. Important decisions have ali cad v been reached on several points, and w ill in a short time be established beyond doubt. The opciatious aie in a good way at Boluo Soldado, where will bo the iiist lock (turning from the Atlantic), and at San Pablo and jNlatachin the woiks will be commenced in the t-hoitcst time possible. The thiid division proceeds with the •>an\e activity in that which concerns it. On the hillside of the Pacific two locks haveahoady been attacked and in a few day* it will be possible to say the same ot others, the giound plots of which are on the point ot being given up. These lapid results have only been possible on account of the activity which the directorgeneral and the di\ isional engineer have not ceased to exert since the commencement ot the different operations. Wo may add, while hpcakinc of the hillside of the Pacific^ that it is absolutely untrue that the contracting firm of Baratoux, Letellier and Cc, of which Mr Bourreau is the director, have stopped their works. This firm is? contented to cede the chantiers de terrassements on which the locks must be constructed. Thus it is seen that the canal with lodes ih on the road to completion, and that we are marching with rapid strides towards the final achievement of the greatest work ot the nineteenth century. Culebra is to have the electric light, the plant for which has already been supplied. It has been established to enable the uninterrupted carrying on of the excavation of the canal at that station throughout the? entire night.
