GLADSTONE ATTACKED. HE IS DENOUNCED BY JOHN BRIGHT AND LORD HARTINGTON.
A i i.rii u from John Bright was read at the icteplion to Lord Hartington at lp-\\ich on March 7fch. Bright reminded the Liberal party that the Gladstonians had -lurked the discussion of Glad--tone & bills, which had ruined the [kiK\. He contiiiued : "They do not try to defend the bilk. Nobody familiar with the detail- of the bill it> able or willing to defend them. The Gladstonians prefer fco attack the Government, to denounce Balt<mr and to spread abroad falsehoods about Ibe ljdJ baioua manner in which the Crimes Act is entoi ced. They have great sympathy tor disloyal liiih leaders and priests, who torget their true mission ib one of peace, not \iolence. But they say nothing on behalf of humbler men imprisoned for oilencea incited by gentlemen disturbers of the peace. The &e\enty of punishment for common oilences in England is far beyond the heserity of sentences of the men w ho-c wilting-, and speeches have caused the terrorism, boycotting, outrages, .uul nmrdei-3 that ha\c disgiaced li eland and shocked mankind during the last seven ycai>. Surely in all modern history there is no m-nincc of humiliation bo gieat asthat to w huh the bulk of the Liberals have been 1 educed b.\ blindly following a leader who, ton aid (he close of a great career, has comnnt tod n grievous erior by adopting a policy to \\hu'h the countn uill never consent." Lord Haitington. in a speech, contended that the Unionist-- had every reason for c ongr.trulation. Their increasing sti'ength, he -aid, -would enable them to maintain then opposition to the dangerous and dishonest -chemcs of (J-ladstone. He declared that Gladstone had now openly palliated \iolence and dishonesty in li eland. Loid HciNchell presided at a dinner of the National Liberal Club on the evening of Maich 7. In a speech he predicted that the Con.-er\ ati\ es before long would pro-po-c a Jlomc Rule scheme, lepie.^enting prolnbly moic advanced views than those of Gladstone.
