YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING.
Auckland, March 24. Th p. annual mooting of bhe Young Metis Christian Association was hold on Friday, March 23rd. Thero was a good attendance of membor.% and the" Rev. J. S. Hill prosided. Proceedings wore opened with singing and prayer. RmntT. — The annual report was read by Mr T. Buddie, ]Ton, Secretary, from which wo extract the following :— The now building had increased the facilities for work, and to somo extent they had beau used for tho objects of the Association. Tin.) gymnasium had proved a groat success. The club room had been v.-cd on 68 occasion*, for football, eiicket, and rowing club meetings free of charge, and 136 other meetings not in connection with the Association had been held in various parts of the building. Tho at tend - njico at tho book-keeping class avciaged 27, and the elocution 16, and the .shorthand da<«*> was very batisfactoiy. The member.* ; of Association numbered 267, 89 membeis having joined during the past year. 'Die library included 2,800 \olumes, and had 97 special subsmbeif. Tho roading-room had been faiily patronised, and the lect.ue scries well attended. Reference was also made to lectures by Row Robjohn and Major Dane, and to the comeisazione in November, which resulted in a net return of £50 (o the building fund. The sphitual woik had been \ery successful, and the Sunday afternoon class had been ably conducted by the Rev. J. y. Hill, assisted by Mr Button. Tho report also stated that tho ordinary working account of the Association was> nov in as satisfactory a state as could have been wished, yet, taking all the accounts together, the position of the Association was about £300 better than at ihe commencement of the year. This was* after paying £74 for litting up the gymnasium, and exclu.si\o of the amount left to the Association by the late Mr C. O. Davi». Alter settling up tiie account? for the new buildinsr, the Committee were left with a .lebb on bui'ding account of about I" 1,700 (in addition to tho mortgroe of £5,000), for which temporary provision had to be made— a sum of £1,500 being borrowed at 7 per cent, on a second mortgage — the £200 remaining being otherwise ananged for. A special efiort would icquirc to bo made for the next year or two, to face a considerable deficit on general account. The Association was under a debt of giatitute to the ladies who had rendered valuable services by sale of work and sub-collections. Balance-sheet. — The following is a summaiyof the annual statement of accounts for the yeai ended February 29th, 1888 :— Cr. : Subscriptions, £338 6s 3d ; lectures, £84 5s 6d ; rents, etc., £373 lla 9d ; conversazione and sale of woik, £70 3s 5d ; Major Dane's lectures, £72 lls 6d ; sundries, £11 4s lid ; duo to the bank, £12.3 4s 4d, less cash in hand, £31 8s 3d j due by City Mission account, £44 15s Sd ; balance transferred to lloating debt account, £370 17s : total, £1,370 0s 9d. Dr. : Balance, £112 16s lid ; salaries £232 15s 3d ; taxes, insurance, gas, water, etc., £197 4s lOd ; advertising and printing, £66 13s 7d ; reading room, library and classes, £91 Is 3d ; lectures, £23 18s ; convex sazione and pale of work, £22 7s 7d ; Major Dane's lectures, £110 14s 3d ; interest, £397 3s ; sundries, £67 4s Sd ; owing by floating debt account, £49 0s 5d : total, £1,370 0s 9d Building Account. — Donations, £26 5s ; sundries, £7 7s 5d ; loan, £1,500 ; balance to floating debt account, £217 18s lid : total, £1,751 lls 4d. Dr. : Balance, £615 12s Id ; paid architect, £173 6e 6d ; contractor, £962 12s 9d : total, £1,751 lls 4d. Floating Debt Account.— Cr. : Donations, £300 5s lOd ; sale of work (May), £253 8s 3d : sundries, £37 4s 6d ; balance, £49 0s sd : total, £679 19s. Dr. : Balance from building fund, £217 18s lid ; fitting up gymnasium, £74 7s 8d ; sundries, £16 15s 6d ; balance general account transferred, £370 17s : total, £679 19s. City Mission Account.-— Cr. : Subscriptions, £135 lls 4d ; balance due to Association, £44 15s 8d : total, £180 7s. Dr. : Balance, £30 7s, payments to City Missionary. The total assets were set. down at £10,530, and liabilities £6,620 10s sd. The Sunday evening services account showed receipts £213 5s 4d ; expenditure, £208 8s ; balance, £4 17s 4d. Sir Win, Fox moved theadoption of the report and balance-sheet, and in doing so expressed pleasure at the good work that had been done by the Association. The Rev. Win. Tebbs seconded the motion. As a clergyman he bore special testimony to the value of the Aasociation, so far as it dealt with those who could not be got at by the churches. The report and balance - sheet were adopted. Callendtr, the retiring Treasure!, and was duly acknowledged. Proceedings closed with the Benediction.
