LATE CABLES.
London, March 21. The " Esercito Italians," the official military organ, states that the prompt defensive measures taken by the Italian Government had been the means of averting a French attack which was contemplated on Spezzia and Uouon early in the month. The Prince of Wale* has stated that from the bun minding circumstances he is convinced that the Emperor Frederick's malady must prove fital. The Queen has received Baron Yauhe, special envoy of the Emperor Frederick. In the House of Lords, the Marquis of Salisbury approved of the system of life peers, hut deprecated the abolition of heriditary in the Upper House. In the House of Lords, Lord Harris suggested that a Committee consisting of°repiesentatives of the Treasury, Colonial, and War Offices should be appointed to consider the question of emigration of pensioners to New Zealand. Under the Kia;ht Hon. C. T. Ritchies (M.P. for St. George's E.) bill, the plan of government for the city of London is as yet incomplete. The second readins of the measure is fixed for April 12th. The Commission Bill has been passed through Committee.
Paris, 1 March 20. Owing to General Boulanger's defiant attitude, it has been decided to adopt fresh measures against him.
Sydney, March 22. The Government of this colony intend to solicit joint action on the part of all the Colonial Governments with a view to patting a complete stop to Chinese immigration. Mr Haynes, member for Miulgee, denounced the protectionists and the Catholics, in the course of a speech last night in the House, and Mr Fletcher walked over and seized him by the throat, threw him on a seat, and was only dragged off with difficulty, amid much excitement, by the •Sergeant -at - Arms. Fletcher, after apologising freely, was suspended for the rest of the sitting.
Melbourne, March 22. The Melbourne " Argus " sees no reason for regret at the disallowance of the Divorce Extension Bill. In so important a matter legislation ought to be uniform, if the bill were assented to Sydney would become the Gretna Green of divorce for the colonies.
Hobart, March 2?. The Raapehu lias 157 passengers on board. She left for Wellington yesterday afternoon.
Adelaide, March 22. The Hon. Mr Downer is the Govern" ment candidate for the Speakership of the House of Representatives.
Cooktowx, March 22. A pearling expedition which had gone to the western end of New Guinea have returned to this port, and report that, owing to the depth of the water, the venture proved a failure. Fever was prevalent, and six divers died in the course of a month.
