MINING NEWS. THE WAITOA SANDS. ABANDONED BY CHRISTCHURCH SYNDICATE.
It is slated that the manager of the Waitoa Gold-mining Company has received instruction fiom the Chriftchurch directors to cease operations, as from indications they consider that the ground, is nob worth " salt." Upwards of 20 holes were put down, some oi them 40 feet deep, and not a colour of gold was found. Cokomanl>e:l, March 17. Royal Oak. — Since latb leport there has been a slight impiovcmenb in the appearance of the reef in the winze, where the two lodes have made into ono and come to the proper undeilay towards the hangingwall. Tho reel at present is about eight inches of solid fstone, showing good mineral indications. Tho tiibuters have crushed their general stuff, which gave a return of 20oz& sdwts retoited gold. On Monday lafet they gob about 501bs of good picked stone from what is called the new reef, diiving toward the Uibute on their low boundary. Pktkti Reid, mine manager. Tokatka. — During the pa&t week, Duncan, Dick, and party, on No. 5 block, obtained another lOlbs ol good picked specimens. This gives them fully 601bs and nearly 3 tons of general quartz on hand, which will give about lOOozs. or more when crushed. Steele and Dyer, fiom No. 8, have obtained about lOlbs of good stone. I This will make for them 251b?. Roberts and party, on No. 17, have also obtained 501bs of picked &tone, which makes 1201bs on hand. This will be taken to the mill for treatment when the battery is disengaged. ; — John Benwey, mine manager, failing boat capsized Thames, Maich 19. Cambria. — The crosscut at No. 4 level is making satisfactory headway by means of the rock-borer. The winze beintr sunk from the No 4 drive on tiie main reef is now in full swing, and, although no picked stone has been secured frpm here, colours of gold are observed in the lode when breaking down, while the quartz also carries mineials of a favourable description. Colours of precious metal are also seen in the various stopes, and the quarts continues to shape payably at the battery. Saxon. — The usual works are proceeding in this mine, but public interest is almost solely centred in the sinking of the winzes on the main reef below .No. 4 level. The lode in both is a good-sized body of stone — fully 3 feet thick— and colours of gold are frequently observed when breaking down, although no picked stone is bagged. Above this level several stopes are being carried along both seaward and hillward, and the quartz broken out is of payable grade. Crushing is proceeding with the usual complement of stampers. Trenton.— lt is generally believed hero that at an early date a start will be made to sink the Company's shaft on the Waiotahi spur a further depth, and carry on operations therefrom, instead of from the Saxon, las at present. It is possible, however, that stoping will be continued on the reef from the latter mine. Waihi U.M. Company.— This Company have purchased the winding and pumping* plant of the old Dart Company, in the Hape Creek, and the machinery will bo j conveyed to Waihi in the course of the next fortnight or three weeks. Paroquet (Waiomo). — Crushing is pro- ! ceeding with ten stampers. Up to the pre" sent 22 tons of quartz have been crushed for 150ozs of amalgam.
