London, March 14. Skvekal agitators from this city have been convicted in Ireland under the Crimes. Acb, and sentenced to seven months' imprisonment, with hard labour. The Prince of Wales, Alboit Victor, and the Duke of Cambridge left to-day for Berlin. The Prince of Naples, son ot tho King of Italy, will represent Italy, and General Billot will represent .France at Kaiser Wilhelm's funeral. No further intelligence has been resolved of the disaster at Suakim, and its truth is doubted. Mr Hcnniker-Hcaton, in his postal paper, denounced the granting- of subsidies for over-sea mail?, and advocated tho threepenny postago starting forthwith. Ho further said that the Pacific cable could only escape the octopus-like clutch of Sir John lender's company by the colonies securing a monopoly, and pointed out that Sir James Andersons Eastern telegraphs had been built without any subsidies being granted, and weie extended wherever the tratHc justified it, the lowest possible tariff being charged, lie pointed out that foreign nations would refuse to grant to the Government the privileges the companies now enjoy, but the companies were willing to transfer the control of cable*, etc., if guaranteed 4 per cent, discount. Lord Bury, who presided at the reading ot the paper, said Mr Heaton was very contradictory in his denunciation of postal management. His lordship advocated the proposal that the Government should acquire the control of telegraphs, urging that half the present rates would be better than allowing the lines to remain idle.

London, March 1 5. The trustees of the Women's Jubilee offering have decided to expend £5,000 in peisonal ornaments for Her Majesty the Queen.
Sydney, March 15. Carroll, tho self-accused mmderer, had been trying to get a passage to England, but hearing that his brother had divulged the secret of his imprisonment for assault, he became downcast. He said he might as well tell of the other crime, which he intended t"> do sooner or later, being broken down by the memory of it. He states that he only struck the girl one blow. Carroll &eems to be in full possession of his faculties, and so far there is no ground for disbelieving that his story is genuine. 'lhe town was greatly excited by a rumour that an alderman was implicated in the frauds, and had committ-ed suicide. It subsequently turned out that an ex-alder-man named Parker had hanged himself this afternoon, but not because he was connected with the recent exposure. The City Corporation frauds are supposed to have been effected by altering the values and quantities on vouchers before presenting them to the Treasury, Some time ago certain frauds were exposed, and the criminals punished ; but the investigation on that occasion was not complete, one of the principals in the conspiracy having died. The engineer at that time was suspended, but afterwards re-instated, and he now asserts that he has no knowledge of the defalcation", and that all papers signed by him have always been signed by three other officers He and three others were suspended to-day, pending furtheY consideration.
Sydney, March 16. Sir R Wisdom, formerly AttorneyGeneral, died to-night. Sir Robert had been ailing since his return from Europe, suffering from a complication of disorders. He suddenly took a turn for the worse. The primary cause was jaundice.
Sydney, March 16. A large number of farms have been destroyed in the prevailing bush fires, and these have become so serious that a number of men are leaving town to cope with them, and as much as £\ a day is being offered for assistance in some places.
Sydney, March 16. It is probable that the Corporation officers who have been suspended as being concerned in the frauds just disclosed will be prosecuted. The search for the missing municipal books and accounts has not proved successful as yet. It is believed they cover the period in which the largest defalcations occur.
Sydney, March 16. ! Griffin, the defaulting teller of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank, wanted for embezzlement ! of ;£2,000, has been arrested at Euroa.
Sydney, March 17. Inconsequence of the number of dis" orderly scenes in the 1 Legislative Assembly recently, the Government have cabled to the English Government for a copy of the procedure rules adopted by the House of Commons, with a view to proposing the adoption here of such of the new rules as may be suitable to the circumstances of a colonial legislature. There have been over sixty incidents of a disorderly character this session.
Sydney, March 17. The ship Aristomene, with 2,700 tons of coal on board, consigned to San Francisco, caught fire at Newcastle at five o'clock this morning. The fire is supposed to have originated in some flax, which was stowed under the locker. The pumps were scfc to work at once,and an immense body of water was put into the ship, when she showed signs of sinking, and the officers decided to
run the vessel ashore. At four o'clock this afternoon the fire was got under. The cost of repairs is estimated at X 3.000.
Sydney, March 17. The locomotive tender question has not yet been definitely settled, but it is understood the workmen are disinclined to agree to the proposals of the manufacturers for a reduction of wages The contracts will now probably be given to English firms.
Brisiune, March 15. Sir Samuel Griffith, the Premier, delivered a speech at Baiculdin, in fcbe course of which he said he regretted to learn that the Chinese had taken to sheop shearing, and also stated that Parliament would have to take steps to see that the revenue did not suffer.
TARIFF CONFERENCE. Buussels, March 16. Seven different countries will be represented at the Tariff Conference Austria, Germany, and France, however, will not be represented. It is proposed to publish the tariffs of the world in the French, English, German, and Spanish languages.
ANOTHER DOMESTIC TRAGEDY, Brisbane, March 17. An elderly man, named Isaac Green, wounded his wife severely last night, and then shot himself dead. The couple had only been married twelve months, but they had quarrelled frequently. It is stated that Green was drunk when he fired the shots.
PROSPECTORS ATTACKED. Brisbane, March 13. A mining party, which left some time ago to prospect Josephs River, New Guinea, have returned to this city. They report that they have lost everything, and that their lives were endangered by the cupidity and hostility of the natives. They only escaped with their lives, by rtealing four canoes and dropping down the river in the darkness, the natives having previously plundered all their goods. The party say that the Government, as represented by the High Commissioner, gave them no assistance whatever, and are doing nothing to facilitate parties going inland to develop the country.
