ST. PATRICKS DAY. FETE IN THE DOMAIN.
Auckland, March 17, TTo-DAY being tho anniversary of Ireland's patron saint, it was, as usual, kept up as a iioliday by a laigc section of the commuuity. In tho early morning tho rain poured down opiously, but St. Patrick ■turned it off in time to pcimit of tho customary festivities. Naturally the chief interost centred in the H.A.C.B. Society procession ami sports in tho Domain, coupled with the annual fOto ot tho children attending- tho Konmn •Catholic {Sunday schools of the city. According to previous arrangements the members of the JLA.C.B. Society attended xaassatSt. Pn tuck 'h Cathodial this moiniug, after which the procession way fotmed along Chapel-street. At 10.30 the handsome banner of tho Order was unfurled, and headed by lmpoy's Band, the procession inarched otl to tho apptopuate tune of " M. Patrick's Day in the .Morning." The following omects matched immediately behind tho banner : District President, Bro. Kearney; D.V. P., Bro. Patterson; J). Tieasmer, Bio. 1\ Flynn; Branch President, Bro. Flynn; 8.V.1', Bi'O. E. O'Hare ; l>. Secietary, Bro. T. H, White; (,ml B. Tiutsiuer, Kjo. W\ Cane. Next followed the delegates from the Onehunga and Pension by Branch Lodges after which matched the ordinary membeis?, about 200 in number. The pvoccssiom passed down WeUe>ley-btreet, where it followed tho Sunday schools to Queen-sticet and then marched down to JShoitlandEtreet, then round Wateiloo Crescent, and along Symonds street to Domain Jtoad, where it again overtook the children's procession. At 10.30 the Sundayschool procession formed in Wyndhamfitreet in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and, headed by tho CJanison Band, they also marched off to the tune of "St. Patrick's Day in the Morning." This procession passed along Albert-street and then .ciown Welleslcy - stieet, thence up -.to Symonds-strect. Immediately behind .the band, matched the girls from tho Homo at the Convent. These weve becomingly attired in white dresses .and hats trimmed with pale bluo. The , children looked well kept, and altogether presented a very pleasing appearance. They numbered about 80. Next followed the girls from the Convent and St. Patrick's Sinday • Schools, about 300 in number, then the boys attending the Mnrist Brotheis 1 day-school, numbering' 22Q, and tho boys from ist. Patrick's Sunday-School, 150 in number. At the head of each class onarqhed their teachers, while tho Alarist Brothers and a number of cleigy also accompanied the procession. As the children searched down Wellesley-streec the bands played "The Haip that Once Through lira's Ha"s." Upon arriving in Lower Symoiids-stiUceb, the children belonging to St. Benedict's parish were discovered dxa\vu up in single hie on either side of the xoad in ocder u> (Uiow the other procession to pass right through. St. Benedict's parish coutiibyted bet\\ecn 650 and 700 scholars, which made the procession a very large one. This included 130 children ftom the Suirey Hills Convent School apd about 70 from Newmaiket. 'The procession was mads gay by the children or St. Benedict's parish being proTided with bannerets composed of a vhito cross on a blue ground. Tho Superior of the Order, the Very Rev. father P'Sullivan, and Father G'Gara were in charge of these children, together with u larg« staff of teachers. While the other procession >yas passing through the avenue, Bishop l»u,ck drove down in his buggy, and rrss greeted with cheers. The St. Benedict's children, headed by the Newmarket Band, »fld,er bandmaster Hultse, fell in at the rear ©ftfreSt. Patrick's contingent, and marched ©If briskly to the time ot " Uown by the Sawnce Bivor," which soon changed into "kejbMeKiss Him for His Mother." At the Domain the children attending St. John's Convent schools, Parnell, also joined the gathering, and the day was spent in the usual manner with games and other sports. H,A.C.B. SOCIETY SPORTS. The sports in connection with the above Society are the leading feature of the day. On this occasion the prizes are more valuable than usual The grand silver cup rewarded by Miss O'Connor, of the Sydney Convent, is of itself a very attractive trophy. This is made from silver obtained from the Broken Hill mines. In addition to this there are also a number of other valuable prizes, which were on view yesterday in the window of the United Service Hotel, Queen-street. These comprise a handsome cabinet formed of choice New Zealand woods, which was presented by Mr Condon, licensee of the hotel, also a number of lamps, cruets, jugs, clocks, fish slicers, meerschaum pipes, &c. Ifesides these, other trophies have also been presented by Dr. Bond, Dr. Erson, King, Walker, and Co., J. A. Tole, J. C. See«©mbe, VV. J. Suiter, J. H. Dalton, L. D. Nathan, Louis Ehrenfried, and Messrs Brown and Campbell. The above prize list should have the effect of bringing out quite a number of candidates. The sports were held in the Domain paddock. Between 5,000 and 6,000 persons were present. Tho bands remained throughout the day and played musical selections at intervals. The usual amusements were provided in the shape of merry-go-rounds, swing boats, and shooting galleries, etc. The following are the results up to the time we went to press :~ i 150 yds Maiden Race, five entries ; Ist, "W. Corbett ; 2nd, McKelvie, 3rd, McGuire. Past- Presidents Handicap (120 yards). — S. Fairweather, Ist ; D. Flynn, 2nd ; Patterson, 3rd. St. Patrick's Handicap (250 yards).— Ist, E. O'Hare; 2nd, McDonald; 3rd, dead heat between Fairweather and McXelvie, Juvenile Race, 10 en tries.-- Ist, Conway (3yds) ; 2nd, E. Noonan (3yds) ,• 3rd, D. Wilson (syds). Irish Jig Dancing Competition. — W. Greaves', 1. J. Lynch and D. O'Keefe also competed. The men danced upon a platform in the centre of the ground, and the contest caused great interest, the competitors being loudly applauded. Race for Men of H.M.s. Nelson. — Blanchard, 1 ; Patfcison, 2 ; Weaving, 3. Hop, Step and Jump.— J. Collins, 1 ; W, Smith, 2. Three others contested this «vent. Friendly Societies' Handicap, 200 yds. — J. McDevmott (Rechabites), 3yds, 1 ; E. O'Hare (H. A. C.B. Society), scratch, 2 ; D. Jones (Foresters), 6yds, 3. The following also ran :— W. Welsh (U.1.0.0.P.), 7yds; E. Lonei'gan (Fountain ot Friendship Lodge), 15yds; F. Corbetfc (H.A.C.8.! Society), 10yds; J. Patterson (H.A.C.B. Society), 9yds; M. OBrien (H.A.C.B. Society). 10yds; and D.' Flynn (H.A.C.B. Society), 11yds. • Members Over 40, 120yds.— J. JNTxon, 3yds, 1 ; J. Turner, scratch, 2 ; J. Cosfcello, 10yds, 3. Lennan and McKeowan, the only other starters, fell. _^
Handicap fok Committebmen, 150 yds. — F. Corbett, 3yds, 1 ; W. Fairweathor, scratch, 2; S. Fainveather, 10yds, 3. 1). Flynn (9yds), P. Kearney (9yds), D. O'Keefo (15ydfe), and J, Patterson (13yds) ft'so ran. Kearney and Patterson led for 50 yards, whon Oorbott cnmo through, and won a splendid raco by about a yard. Tun Thkek-legged Race was won by Patterson and Fairweather. Tho sports were under the direction of the following officers: — Brother P. Kearney, District President and Secretary; Brother J. Patterson, D.V,P. ; Brother James Flynn, D.T. ; Brother D. Flynn, Branch President; Brother E. O'Hare, B.V.P. : Brother T. K. White, Branch Secretary; Brothers Mollhonc, M. Lennan, and several others. The prizes will bo presented this* evening at the Opera House.
HO WICK CELEBRATION. Monsigneur MeDonnld, not to bo behind tlio time.- 1 , has inaugurated a fcasfc for the children attonding tho Roman Catholic bchools of llowick, Panoairc, and Pakaranga. The children fiom tho two latter districts are to proceed to HowicU aaad the fotc will take place in Mr O'Connell's paddock. The Onehunga Band has al^o been engaged fox* the day. t-o that " high jinks " may bo anticipated at llowick under tho caio of iMonsigncur McDonald. A number ot his old friends in Auckland also made arlangemcnts to go out and join in the ftuu
